Carpet fibres
The fibre a carpet is made from decides how it feels, how it wears and how easily it cleans.
| Fibre | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon | Very hard-wearing and springs back well after being crushed | Costs more than other synthetics |
| Polyester | Soft, with rich colours; resists many stains | Flattens faster in busy areas |
| Polypropylene | Affordable and very stain-resistant; suits rentals and outdoor-facing rooms | Can crush and look worn in high-traffic areas |
| Wool and wool blends | Natural, warm, resilient and naturally flame-resistant | The most expensive; can be harder to clean some stains from |
Pile and construction
Cut pile carpets have loops cut into upright tufts: plush, soft and good for bedrooms. Loop pile keeps the loops intact, which makes a tougher surface for busy areas, though loops can snag on pets' claws. Denser carpets, with tufts packed close together, generally wear better than long, loose ones, whatever the fibre.
Carpet tiles come in squares that can be replaced individually. They're common in offices, and practical in playrooms and home offices.
Underlay matters more than you'd think
Underlay sits between the carpet and the floor. A good one makes carpet feel thicker and softer, insulates against cold floors, reduces noise, and takes some of the pressure off the carpet so it lasts longer. A thin or worn-out underlay makes even an expensive carpet wear faster. Don't reuse old underlay under new carpet.
Measuring and fitting
Carpet comes in rolls of fixed widths, so fitters plan where the seams fall and how much will be cut off. That's why the quantity on a quote is often more than the floor area of the room. A good fitter places seams away from doorways and walkways, where they wear and show most.
Wall-to-wall carpet is stretched over gripper strips fixed around the edge of the room. Stretching it properly stops ripples forming later. Stairs take more skill and more carpet, and are usually priced separately.
Choosing carpet room by room
Different rooms ask different things of a carpet, and many homes end up with more than one type.
- Bedrooms see light traffic, so softness can come first: a plush cut pile in polyester or wool feels good underfoot.
- Living rooms need a balance of comfort and durability; a dense nylon or wool blend holds up to daily use.
- Passages and stairs take the most wear and the most direct footfall. Choose the toughest carpet in the house here: a dense nylon or wool, and avoid long pile that flattens quickly.
- Rooms next to outside doors collect grit and the odd muddy shoe; stain-resistant fibres and a darker or patterned colour hide dirt between cleans.
What carpets costs
Entry-level carpet usually costs about R280 to R400 per m² fitted, mid-range residential carpet R400 to R600, and premium or wool carpets from R550 up to around R1,100. A typical 12 m² bedroom in a mid-range carpet comes to roughly R4,000 to R7,000 installed.

Before you hire: a carpets checklist
Carpet quotes are only comparable when they cover the same carpet, the same underlay and the same fitting work.
Get the carpet specified
Ask for the brand, range, fibre and pile type, so you can compare like with like.
Ask which underlay is included
Ask for the underlay type and thickness. A cheaper quote may have a thinner underlay.
Check the measured quantity
Ask how the quantity was worked out and where seams will fall. Quantities larger than the floor area are normal, but should be explained.
Ask what's included in fitting
Removing old carpet and underlay, moving furniture, gripper strips, door bars and trimming doors can all be extras.
Ask about stairs separately
Stairs take more time and material. Ask for them to be priced separately.
Ask about care and the warranty
Ask how the carpet should be cleaned and what the manufacturer's warranty covers, such as wear and stain resistance.
Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The carpet fitters who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.
Is my information safe?
We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.
Carpets questions, answered
Which carpet is best for a busy family home?
Nylon is the most hard-wearing synthetic, and a dense loop or cut pile wears well. Polypropylene suits budgets and resists stains but flattens faster in busy areas.
Why does a carpet quote cover more than my room size?
Carpet comes in fixed-width rolls, so fitting a room usually leaves offcuts. A good fitter plans seams to minimise waste and keep joins away from walkways.
Do I need new underlay?
Yes. Old underlay is usually compressed and worn, and it makes new carpet wear faster. New underlay makes the carpet feel better and last longer.
Can carpet go over a tiled floor?
Yes. Gripper strips can be fixed to tiles, and underlay smooths out the grout lines.
Why has my carpet developed ripples?
Usually because it wasn't stretched tightly enough when fitted, or the underlay has moved. A fitter can re-stretch it.
Are carpet tiles a good idea at home?
They're practical in playrooms, home offices and rentals, because damaged tiles can be replaced individually. Wall-to-wall carpet feels softer and more seamless in living areas and bedrooms.
How long does carpet fitting take?
A few rooms can often be done in a day, once furniture is moved and the old carpet removed. Stairs and large homes take longer.
