What goes into a curtain price
Made-to-measure curtains are priced on far more than the window size. Two quotes for the same window can differ widely because of these choices:
- Fabric: the single biggest cost, and it varies enormously.
- Fullness: how much fabric is gathered across the width. Fuller curtains use more fabric but hang in richer folds.
- Heading style: the way the top of the curtain is made, which decides how it hangs.
- Lining: an unlined curtain, a standard lining, a blockout lining or a thermal lining.
- Length: floor-length curtains use more fabric than sill-length ones.
- Tracks or rods, and fitting.
Heading styles
| Heading | Look | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Pencil pleat | Tight, even gathers | A classic that works with tracks and rods |
| Eyelet | Large rings punched into the fabric, threaded onto a rod | Deep, regular folds; a modern, casual look |
| Wave (S-fold) | Soft, even S-shaped waves | A contemporary look on a special track; very popular for sheers |
| Pinch pleat | Fabric pinched into tailored pleats | A formal, tailored finish; uses more fabric |
Linings do more than you'd think
A lining protects the curtain fabric from sun damage, helps it hang well, and adds insulation. Blockout linings darken bedrooms. Thermal linings reduce heat loss through windows on winter nights and keep summer heat out, which helps on large, west-facing windows.
Many homes layer sheers behind main curtains, or on a double track: sheers soften light and give daytime privacy, and the main curtains close at night.
Tracks, rods and measuring
Tracks hide the fixings and suit pencil pleat and wave curtains, and can be bent around bay windows. Rods are a visible, decorative feature, suiting eyelet and some pleated styles. For heavy curtains, the track or rod and its brackets need to be strong and fixed into solid wall.
Mounting the track higher than the window and wider than the frame makes windows look bigger and lets curtains stack clear of the glass when open. Measuring for curtains is easy to get wrong, which is why most curtain makers measure on site.
Choosing curtain fabric
The right fabric depends on the room and the window as much as on looks. Linen and cotton drape beautifully and look relaxed, but crease and can fade in strong sun. Polyester and blends are durable, hold their colour well and are often washable. Velvet and heavy weaves insulate well and suit formal rooms and bedrooms. Sheer voiles filter light and give daytime privacy.
South African sun is hard on curtains, especially on north- and west-facing windows. A lining protects the face fabric, and fade-resistant fabrics last longer where the sun hits them for hours. Ask the curtain maker whether a fabric is washable or dry-clean only, and whether it's likely to shrink, before you choose.
What curtains costs
Made-to-measure curtains are priced mostly by fabric: roughly R300 to R550 per metre for sheers, R350 to R600 for poly-cotton or linen and R500 to R850 for blockout, before lining, track and fitting. A medium window with quality fabric and lining typically comes to R1,800 to R3,500. These figures are a guide from limited published data, so treat them as a starting point for quotes.
- Made-to-measure lined curtains for a medium window
- R1,500–R3,500 per window
- Standard poly-cotton or linen fabric, made up
- R350–R600/metre

Before you hire: a curtains checklist
Curtain quotes are only comparable when they're for the same fabric, fullness, heading and lining.
Ask for a measure at your home
Expect the curtain maker to measure each window and agree track height and width with you.
Get fabric, fullness and heading in writing
Ask for the fabric range and colour, the fullness ratio, heading style and lining on every quote.
Ask about the track or rod
Ask which track or rod is quoted, how it's fixed, and whether it suits the weight of your curtains.
Check what's included
Ask whether fitting, removing old curtains and tracks, and hanging the new curtains are included.
Ask how to care for the fabric
Ask whether the curtains can be washed or must be dry-cleaned, and whether the fabric resists sun fading.
Confirm the lead time
Made-to-measure curtains take time to make. Ask for the expected delivery and fitting date.
Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?

Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.

You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.

Curtains questions, answered
Why do made-to-measure curtains cost so much?
Fabric is usually the largest cost, multiplied by the fullness and length. Linings, heading style, tracks and fitting add to it.
What is curtain fullness?
How much fabric is gathered across the width of the track. More fullness gives richer folds but uses more fabric.
Do curtains help keep a room warm?
Yes, especially with a thermal lining. Closing lined curtains at night reduces heat loss through windows.
Track or rod?
Tracks hide fixings and suit pencil pleat and wave curtains, and can follow bay windows. Rods are decorative and suit eyelet curtains.
How high should a curtain track go?
Usually above the window frame and wider than it, so the curtains can open clear of the glass and the window looks larger.
Can sheers and curtains share one track?
With a double track, yes: sheers on the inner track for daytime privacy and the main curtains on the outer one.
