Felling, dismantling or pruning?
Taking a tree down sounds like one job, but it's priced according to how it has to be done. "Felling" in the strict sense means cutting the trunk at the base and letting the tree fall in one piece, which needs a clear area the full height of the tree.
In most suburban gardens there isn't that space. Instead the tree is dismantled in sections: a climber or a crew in a cherry picker cuts it from the top down, lowering heavy pieces on ropes so they don't land on the roof, the wall or the neighbour's car. It's slower, needs more skill and equipment, and costs more, but it's the only safe way to remove a large tree close to buildings.
Pruning removes selected branches to reduce weight, let in light or clear a roof or power line. Good pruning cuts back to a branch junction, so the tree heals; lopping the top off a tree leaves it weaker and often makes it regrow faster and more dangerously.
Stumps and clean-up
Removing a tree usually leaves a stump. A stump grinder chews it down below ground level so you can plant, lay lawn or pave over it. Grinding is normally quoted separately from felling, and so is removing the wood, branches and chips, so check what's included. Some owners keep the firewood; others want the site left clear.
Protected trees and permission
Some indigenous trees are protected by law. Under the National Forests Act, 1998, you may not cut, damage or remove a listed protected tree without a licence from the national Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, even on your own property. The list is published each year and includes trees such as several yellowwoods and the baobab.
Trees on the pavement outside your property usually belong to the municipality. Don't fell or prune them without permission. Some municipalities also have their own rules about trees in heritage areas.
At the other end of the scale, some trees in South African gardens are listed invasive species, such as certain gums and wattles, and owners are required to control them. If you're removing one, mention it when you ask for quotes.
Power lines
Never let anyone fell or prune a tree touching or near overhead power lines without the supply authority's involvement. Contact Eskom or your municipality: they may need to switch off the line or do the work themselves. A reputable tree company will tell you this before you ask.

Before you hire: a tree felling checklist
Tree work is one of the most dangerous jobs around a home, for the workers and for your property. Insurance and experience matter more here than in almost any other trade.
Ask for proof of public liability insurance
If a branch goes through your roof or the neighbour's, you want the company's insurer to pay, not yours. Ask for the certificate, and check it's current.
Ask how they'll take the tree down
Felled in one piece, or dismantled in sections with rigging? For trees near buildings, a confident, specific answer is a good sign.
Check whether the tree is protected
If it's indigenous, ask whether it's on the protected list. A licence is needed before a protected tree is cut, and the fine for doing it without one is severe.
Get clean-up and stump grinding in writing
Wood removal, chipping and stump grinding are often extra. Ask for each to be priced separately.
Keep power lines out of it
If the tree is near overhead lines, the work needs Eskom or the municipality involved. Don't accept a quote that ignores this.
Agree how the garden will be protected
Ask how they'll protect lawns, paving and walls from falling wood and machinery, and who pays if something is damaged.
Where these rules come from
- National Forests Act 84 of 1998, SAFLII
- Protected trees licence application, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment
Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The tree fellers who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.
Is my information safe?

Tree Felling questions, answered
Do I need permission to cut down a tree on my property?
Usually not, unless it's a nationally protected species, which needs a licence under the National Forests Act, or your municipality has its own rules, for example in heritage areas. Trees on the pavement belong to the municipality.
Which trees are protected in South Africa?
The national list of protected trees is published each year under the National Forests Act and includes species such as several yellowwoods and the baobab. If your tree is indigenous, check before it's cut.
Why is removing a tree near my house so expensive?
Because it can't simply be felled. It has to be dismantled from the top down and lowered in pieces, which takes a skilled climber, rigging equipment and more time.
Is topping a tree a good way to make it smaller?
No. Cutting the top off a tree weakens it and often triggers fast, weakly attached regrowth. Proper crown reduction removes branches back to a junction, so the tree heals and stays stable.
Do I have to grind the stump?
Only if you want to use the space. A stump can sprout again, and it gets in the way of lawn, paving and replanting. Grinding takes it below ground level.
A tree is leaning over the power line. Who do I call?
Your electricity supplier: Eskom or your municipality. Don't touch the tree or let anyone work on it until they've advised you.
