Why people install solar now

For years, load-shedding drove South Africans to solar. As of October 2026, Eskom has gone well over a year without implementing it, and the reasons to install have shifted: electricity tariffs that keep rising, local outages from faults, cable theft and municipal network problems, and the value of producing your own power during the day.

That changes how a system should be designed. A system sized only to ride out four-hour load-shedding stages may be the wrong one for cutting your monthly bill. Tell installers what you want: lower bills, backup, or both.

The three parts of a system

  • Panels convert sunlight to electricity. System size is quoted in kilowatt-peak (kWp): the total rated output of all the panels.
  • The inverter turns the panels' direct current into the alternating current your home uses, and manages the batteries and the grid connection. Its size, in kilowatts or kVA, limits how many appliances can run at once.
  • Batteries store energy for the evening and for outages. Their capacity is in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are now standard for homes.

Grid-tied, hybrid or off-grid?

TypeHow it worksBest for
Grid-tiedPanels and an inverter, no batteries; uses solar first, then the gridCutting daytime bills at the lowest cost. No backup when the grid goes down.
HybridPanels, inverter and batteries, still connected to the gridMost homes: lower bills plus backup during outages.
Off-gridFully independent, with no grid connection at allRemote properties, or owners willing to pay for a much larger system.

Registration and compliance

A solar system connected to your home's wiring is classed as small-scale embedded generation (SSEG). Most municipalities, and Eskom where it supplies you directly, require it to be registered or approved, and only accept inverters certified to the NRS 097-2-1 standard for connecting to the grid.

Rules vary by municipality. In the City of Cape Town, for example, every system with or without batteries on a property with a City electricity supply has been treated as grid-tied since 1 October 2023, and must be registered. The installation also needs an electrical certificate of compliance from a registered electrician.

Unregistered systems can lead to fines, disconnection, insurance problems and delays when you sell the house. A good installer handles the paperwork as part of the job.

What solar power costs

A fully installed **5 kW hybrid solar system with around 10 kWh of lithium battery** costs roughly **R75,000 to R145,000** in 2026, depending on brands and installer. Smaller 3 kW starter systems with one battery start around R30,000, while 8 kW systems run from about R80,000 to well over R200,000. The batteries are usually the largest single cost.

5 kW hybrid system with about 10 kWh lithium battery, installed
R74,500–R145,000 per project
3 to 3.6 kW starter system with one battery, installed
R30,000–R90,000 per project
8 kW hybrid system with about 10 kWh battery, installed
R80,000–R225,000 per project
Lithium (LiFePO4) battery, about 5 kWh
R14,000–R28,000 per unit

Before you hire: a solar power checklist

Solar quotes are easy to make look similar and hard to compare. These questions bring out the differences.

  • Ask for a load assessment

A good installer asks what you want to run, and when, before designing the system. A standard package quoted without questions is a guess.

  • Compare kWp, inverter kW and battery kWh

Ask for all three numbers, and for the make and model of the panels, inverter and batteries, so you're comparing like with like.

  • Check the inverter is NRS 097-2-1 certified

Municipalities and Eskom only accept certified inverters for grid connection. Ask for proof that the model is on the approved list.

  • Make registration part of the job

Ask who handles SSEG registration with your municipality, and confirm the electrical certificate of compliance is included.

  • Ask about the roof

Ask how the panels will be fixed, how roof penetrations will be waterproofed, and who's responsible if the roof leaks afterwards.

  • Get warranties in writing

Panels, inverters and batteries each carry their own manufacturer warranty, and the installation should have a workmanship guarantee. Get all of them in writing.

  • Check for industry quality programmes

Ask whether the installer is part of a recognised quality scheme, such as the PV GreenCard programme, and whether you'll get the documentation.

Before you request quotes

The questions people ask us most.

Is it really free?

Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.

Will I be flooded with calls?

No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.

Do I have to accept a quote?

No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.

Are the providers any good?

More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.

How quickly will I hear back?

The solar installers who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.

What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?

You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.

Is my information safe?

We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.

Solar Power questions, answered

Do I have to register my solar system?

In most municipalities, yes, if the system is connected to your home's wiring. Requirements vary, so ask your installer to check your municipality's rules and handle the application. The City of Cape Town requires every system on its supply to be registered, with or without batteries.

What size solar system do I need?

It depends on what you want to run and when. Start with your electricity bill and the appliances you want backed up. An installer should do a load assessment before recommending a size.

Is solar still worth it now that load-shedding has stopped?

For many homes, yes, because of rising tariffs and local outages. The payback depends on how much power you use during the day and how the system is sized. Ask installers to show you the expected savings, not only the backup capacity.

How long do solar batteries last?

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are rated for many thousands of charge cycles, and manufacturers typically warrant them for years. Check the warranty terms and the rated cycles for the specific model quoted.

Can I run my geyser on solar?

A geyser element uses a lot of power, so running it from a battery drains it quickly. Many owners heat water from solar panels during the day, or use a heat pump or solar geyser instead.

Does solar work on cloudy days?

Panels still produce power on cloudy days, but much less. A hybrid system draws from the grid or batteries when solar output drops.

What is an electrical certificate of compliance for solar?

It confirms the installation meets the wiring regulations, and must be issued by a registered electrician. Municipalities usually require it for SSEG registration.
