Why aluminium
Aluminium has largely replaced steel and timber for windows and doors in South African homes. It doesn't rust like steel or rot like timber, needs very little maintenance, and is strong enough to make slim frames around large panes of glass, which suits the big openings to patios and gardens that many homes now want.
Frames are usually powder-coated in white, charcoal, bronze or another colour, or anodised, which gives a metallic finish. Both protect the aluminium; near the coast, ask for a coating specified for marine conditions.
Window and door types
| Type | How it opens | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Side-hung casement | Hinged at the side, like a door | Good ventilation; the classic choice |
| Top-hung | Hinged at the top, opening outwards | Can stay open in light rain |
| Sliding window | Sashes slide past each other | Doesn't swing into the room or onto a walkway |
| Sliding door | One or more panels slide past fixed or moving panels | Space-saving; opening width is limited to part of the frame |
| Stacking door | Several panels slide and stack behind each other | Opens most of the width to a patio |
| Folding (bi-fold) door | Panels fold back concertina-style | Opens almost the full width; needs space for the folded stack |
Safety glass and the building regulations
The glazing part of the building regulations, SANS 10400-N, says where safety glass must be used. It applies to the glass in all doors, including sliding, folding, hinged and pivot doors; to glass close to doors; to low windows close to the floor; and to glazing in and near baths and showers. Safety glass is either toughened, which breaks into small blunt pieces, or laminated, which holds together on a plastic interlayer when broken.
A reputable installer will specify safety glass where it's required as a matter of course. Ask each one to confirm which panes are safety glass on the quote.
Glass that saves energy
Large areas of ordinary glass let heat pour in on summer afternoons and escape on winter nights. Double glazing, low-emissivity (low-E) coatings and tinted glass all reduce heat gain and loss, and new buildings and qualifying alterations must meet the energy-efficiency requirements of SANS 10400-XA. Ask installers what glass they recommend for your west- and north-facing openings.
What aluminium windows and doors costs
Most standard-sized aluminium windows cost about R1,800 to R5,000 each once fitted, and replacing all twelve windows in a three-bedroom house typically comes to around R34,000 to R68,000. Doors cover a much wider range: stock sliding doors start near R3,000, while made-to-measure stacking doors run from about R15,000 to R58,000 installed for three or four panels.

Before you hire: a aluminium windows and doors checklist
Every aluminium quote looks similar until you ask about the profile, the glass and the installation.
Ask for a site measure
Aluminium is made to measure. Expect the installer to measure every opening before giving a firm price.
Get the profile range and finish specified
Ask for the aluminium profile system, the colour and the coating type. Heavier-duty profiles cost more and suit large doors.
Confirm safety glass where it's required
Ask which panes are safety glass under SANS 10400-N, and whether it's toughened or laminated.
Ask how old frames will be removed
Replacing steel or timber frames can damage plaster. Ask how frames will be removed and whether making good the plaster and paint is included.
Ask about sealing and drainage
Ask how the frames will be sealed into the walls and how sliding tracks drain, so water doesn't come in under the door.
Check industry membership and guarantees
Ask whether the company belongs to an industry body such as AAAMSA, and get the guarantee on the frames, glass and workmanship in writing.

Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The aluminium window installers who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.
Is my information safe?
We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.
Aluminium Windows and Doors questions, answered
Where do I need safety glass?
Under SANS 10400-N, safety glass is required in all doors, in glass close to doors, in low windows near the floor, and in and near bath and shower enclosures. Your installer should specify it.
Stacking or folding doors?
Stacking doors slide behind each other and open most of the width. Folding doors open almost the full width but need space for the folded panels. Both suit patios.
Can aluminium windows replace old steel windows?
Yes. The old frames are removed and new aluminium frames fitted into the openings. Ask whether repairing plaster and paint around the new frames is included.
Is double glazing worth it?
It reduces heat loss and gain and cuts noise. It's most worthwhile on large openings, west-facing glass and homes in cold or noisy areas.
Will aluminium frames corrode at the coast?
Aluminium resists rust, but salt air can attack poor coatings. Ask for a powder coat or anodised finish specified for coastal conditions, and rinse frames occasionally.
How long do aluminium windows take to make?
Because they're made to measure, there's a manufacturing lead time after the site measure. Ask each installer for the lead time with the quote.
