Two kinds of shutter
"Shutters" covers two quite different products, and many homes use both.
Security shutters are lockable aluminium shutters, fitted inside or outside a window or door, that act as a barrier against intruders, often replacing burglar bars. They look like plantation shutters, with louvres you can tilt for light and air, but are built from reinforced aluminium with security locks.
Plantation shutters are decorative interior shutters with wide louvres, made from basswood, other timbers, PVC or aluminium. They control light, privacy and airflow, and replace blinds or curtains with a cleaner, architectural look.
Security shutters
Compared with burglar bars, security shutters let you open the window fully without a grid of steel across the view, and close and lock when you need them to. Panels can be hinged, folding or sliding, so they work on large openings such as patio doors.
Their strength depends on the aluminium profile, the reinforcing inside the frames and louvres, the locking system and, above all, how they're fixed to the building. Ask installers how the frame is anchored into the wall, and test-lock a display model before you buy.
Plantation shutter materials
In bathrooms, kitchens and humid coastal homes, choose PVC or aluminium. Timber suits living areas and bedrooms.
| Material | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Basswood and other timbers | Light, stable, and can be painted or stained | Not suited to wet rooms or direct water |
| PVC or composite | Moisture-resistant and affordable | Heavier, and wide panels can sag |
| Aluminium | Very durable; suits bathrooms, patios and the coast | A more modern, less traditional look |
Measuring and fitting
Shutters are made to measure for each opening, and windows are rarely perfectly square, so installers measure carefully and fit frames that compensate. They can be mounted inside the window recess or on a frame around it. Hinged panels need room to swing open, so window handles, sills and nearby furniture all affect the layout.
Light, air and privacy
Shutters give finer control than most window coverings. With the louvres tilted up, light bounces off the ceiling while people outside can't see in; tilted down, you see the garden while sun is kept off the floor. Opened fully, the panels fold back and leave the window clear. Many people split tall windows into an upper and lower section, so the top can let in light while the bottom stays closed for privacy.
Because air flows between the louvres, shutters also work well on windows you want open for ventilation, including at night when security shutters are locked.
Caring for shutters
Dust the louvres regularly with a soft cloth or a vacuum brush attachment. Painted timber shutters can be wiped with a barely damp cloth; PVC and aluminium handle a wipe with a mild cleaner. On security shutters near the coast, rinse the frames occasionally to remove salt, and keep the locks and hinges working smoothly as the manufacturer recommends.
What shutters costs
PVC and composite plantation shutters are the cheapest at about R2,000 to R4,000 per m², with timber at roughly R3,500 to R7,500. Aluminium security shutters typically cost R5,500 to R8,800 per m² installed, so a standard 1.44 m² window comes to about R7,900 to R12,700 and a sliding patio door can pass R40,000. These figures are a guide from limited published data.
- Aluminium security shutters, installed
- R5,500–R8,800/m²
- Timber (basswood or other wood) plantation shutters, installed
- R3,500–R7,500/m²
- PVC, polysatin or composite plantation shutters, installed
- R2,000–R4,000/m²
- Aluminium plantation or louvre shutters (non-security), installed
- R2,800–R6,000/m²

Before you hire: a shutters checklist
Shutters are a significant, made-to-measure purchase. Check the specification, especially for security.
Ask for a measure at your home
Shutters are made for each opening. Expect a careful site measure before a firm price.
For security shutters, ask how they're anchored
Ask how the frames are fixed into the walls, what reinforcing is used and what locks are fitted. A shutter is only as strong as its fixings.
Get the material and finish specified
Ask for the material, louvre size, colour and finish for each shutter.
Choose the right material for wet areas
For bathrooms, kitchens and coastal homes, ask for PVC or aluminium rather than timber.
Check insurance requirements
If you're replacing burglar bars with security shutters, check with your insurer whether they meet the policy's security requirements.
Ask about the warranty
Ask what the warranty covers, such as the frames, louvres, hinges and locks, and for how long.
Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?

Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.

Shutters questions, answered
Are security shutters as safe as burglar bars?
Well-made, well-fixed security shutters are a strong barrier, and let you open the window fully when they're unlocked. Strength depends on the profile, reinforcing, locks and fixing. Check with your insurer too.
What's the difference between security and plantation shutters?
Security shutters are reinforced, lockable aluminium barriers against intruders. Plantation shutters are decorative interior shutters for light, privacy and airflow.
Can shutters go in a bathroom?
Yes, in PVC or aluminium. Timber shutters aren't suited to wet rooms.
Can security shutters cover sliding doors?
Yes. Folding, sliding and hinged security shutters are made for patio and sliding doors.
How long do shutters take to make?
They're made to measure, so there's a manufacturing lead time after measuring. Ask each installer for the lead time.
Do shutters keep heat out?
Closed louvres block direct sun and reduce heat gain, and shutters add a layer of insulation at the window.
