Types of garage door

Doors come in steel, aluminium, wood and composite finishes. Steel doors are the most common and the best value; timber looks warm but needs maintenance; insulated sectional doors help keep a garage cooler in summer and warmer in winter, which matters if it's used as a workshop or is under a bedroom.

TypeHow it worksWorth knowing
SectionalHorizontal panels hinged together, running up into the roof space on tracksThe most popular choice: insulated options, quiet, and needs no space in front of the door. Needs headroom and depth inside the garage.
Roll-upNarrow slats that roll up onto a drum above the openingSuits garages with little headroom; common on outbuildings and commercial units.
Tip-up (up-and-over)A single panel that tips up and slides into the roofSimple and affordable, but swings out in front of the garage as it opens.

Garage door motors

Automating a garage door adds convenience and security: you don't have to get out of the car at night. Motors are sized for the weight and type of door, and quotes should state the motor model, the number of remotes and whether it includes a battery.

A battery backup keeps the door working during power cuts. Without one, you'll need to open the door with the manual release, which also means the door can be opened from outside if the release isn't secured.

Springs, cables and safety

Sectional and tip-up doors are balanced by springs, so a heavy door feels light to lift. Those springs are under high tension, and a broken spring or cable is the most common reason a door suddenly won't open. Replacing them is not a DIY job: a released spring can cause serious injury. Call a garage door technician.

Automated doors should have safety beams across the opening, so the door stops and reverses if something, or someone, is in its path. Test them regularly by placing an object in the doorway while the door closes.

Repair or replace?

Most problems, such as noisy rollers, a broken spring, a slipping cable or a worn motor gear, are repairs. Replacement makes sense when the door panels themselves are badly dented, rusted through or warped, or when an old door can't be safely automated. A technician can usually tell you on the first visit.

Looking after a garage door

A few minutes every few months keeps a door running smoothly: keep the tracks clean, lubricate rollers and hinges with a product suited to garage doors, listen for new grinding or scraping noises, and test the safety beams. Have the door serviced as the installer recommends, so worn springs and cables are replaced before they fail.

What garage doors costs

Roll-up doors are the cheapest option at about R5,000 to R18,000 for a single garage, while an automated single sectional door usually costs R12,000 to R25,000 installed. Double sectional doors run about R18,000 to R40,000, and adding or replacing a motor costs around R3,000 to R8,000 fitted.

Before you hire: a garage doors checklist

A garage door is heavy, motorised and under tension, so experience matters more than price.

  • Ask for a site visit

Headroom, side room and the depth of the garage decide which doors will fit. Expect the installer to measure before quoting.

  • Get the door and motor specified

Ask for the door type, material, colour and insulation, and the motor model, number of remotes and battery backup.

  • Ask about safety features

Confirm the motor includes safety beams and auto-reverse, and that the manual release is secure from outside.

  • Ask what's included in removal

Ask whether removing and disposing of the old door, and any making good of the walls, is included.

  • Leave springs to professionals

Don't attempt spring or cable repairs yourself. Ask the technician to explain what was replaced and why.

  • Get guarantees and service terms

Ask for the guarantee on the door, the motor and the installation, and how often the door should be serviced.

Garage Doors questions, answered

Which garage door is best?

Sectional doors are the most popular: they're quiet, can be insulated, and don't swing out in front. Roll-up doors suit garages with little headroom; tip-up doors are the simplest and most affordable.

Why won't my garage door open?

Common causes are a broken spring or cable, a flat motor battery, blocked or misaligned safety beams, or a worn motor gear. A broken spring needs a technician.

Can I fix a broken garage door spring myself?

No. Garage door springs are under high tension and can cause serious injury if released. Call a garage door technician.

Will my garage door motor work in a power cut?

Only if it has a battery backup in good condition. Ask for one when you buy a motor, and replace the battery when it no longer holds a charge.

Can an old garage door be automated?

Often, yes, if the door is in good condition and runs smoothly by hand. A technician can check whether it's suitable.

How do I test my garage door's safety beams?

Close the door and place an object, such as a box, in the doorway. The door should stop and reverse. If it doesn't, have it checked.
