Replacing countertops on their own

New countertops are one of the most effective ways to transform a kitchen without replacing it. If the cabinets are sound and level, old tops can usually be removed and new ones templated and fitted on the existing units, often alongside a new sink, tap and splashback.

The catch is what's underneath: old tops can hide water damage in the sink unit, and cabinets that aren't level have to be packed or adjusted before stone goes on. A good supplier checks the cabinets before quoting.

Comparing countertop materials

MaterialStrengthsWatch out for
Engineered quartzNon-porous, so it resists stains and needs no sealing; consistent colours and patternsCan be damaged by very hot pans; not designed for outdoor use, as UV can discolour it
GraniteNatural stone, very hard and heat-resistant; every slab is uniquePorous varieties need periodic sealing; colours vary between batches
Porcelain slabsVery hard, heat- and UV-resistant, thin and modern-lookingEdges and corners can chip if knocked; needs a specialist fabricator
Solid surfaceSeamless joins and integrated sinks; minor scratches can be sanded outSofter, so it scratches and can be marked by heat
LaminateThe most affordable; huge choice of colours and patternsDamaged by heat and knife cuts; water swells the core at joins and cut-outs
WoodWarm and natural; good as a breakfast bar or island topNeeds regular oiling; can stain and mark near water

Templating, cut-outs and edges

Stone, quartz and porcelain tops are made to measure. Once the cabinets are in place, the fabricator templates the kitchen, measuring exactly, and cuts the tops in the factory. Any cut-outs for the sink, hob and tap holes are made then, so you need to have chosen your sink and hob before templating.

Sinks can be top-mounted, sitting on the countertop, or undermounted, fixed underneath for a clean edge you can wipe crumbs straight into. Undermount sinks need a solid material with polished cut-out edges. Edge profiles, from simple pencil-rounded edges to thicker mitred edges, affect both the look and the price.

Joins and installation

Long runs and L-shapes usually need a join, because slabs come in limited sizes. Ask where joins will fall: a good fabricator places them away from the sink and hob, and matches the pattern across them.

Heavy stone tops need cabinets that are level and strong enough to carry them, and overhanging breakfast bars need proper support brackets.

What kitchen countertops costs

Installed kitchen countertops in South Africa range from roughly **R450 per m² for postformed laminate** to **R2,200–R6,000 per m² for engineered quartz**, with granite usually in between at R1,500–R4,500 per m². A typical 2.5 m² replacement can therefore cost anything from about R1,100 in laminate to R15,000 or more in quartz, before removal of the old tops and extras.

Before you hire: a kitchen countertops checklist

Countertop quotes are easier to compare once you know what's been measured and what's included.

  • Choose the sink and hob before templating

Cut-outs are made in the factory, so the fabricator needs the exact sink, hob and tap models before cutting.

  • Get the material and thickness specified

Ask for the brand, colour, thickness and finish of the material quoted, so you're comparing the same product.

  • Ask what's included

Removing old tops, cut-outs, edge profiles, splashbacks, sink installation and plumbing reconnection can each be separate.

  • Ask where the joins will be

Ask how many joins there will be and where, and how they'll be finished.

  • Have the cabinets checked

Ask the supplier to confirm your cabinets are level and strong enough for the material, before you commit.

  • Ask about care and the warranty

Ask how to clean the material, whether it needs sealing, and what the manufacturer's warranty covers.

Before you request quotes

The questions people ask us most.

Is it really free?

Kitchen Countertops questions, answered

Can I replace countertops without replacing my cabinets?

Usually, yes, if the cabinets are sound and level. The old tops are removed and the new ones templated to fit the existing units.

Quartz or granite: which is better?

Quartz is non-porous and needs no sealing, with consistent colours. Granite is natural, very heat-resistant and unique in pattern, but some types need sealing. Both are durable.

Can I put hot pans on my countertop?

Granite and porcelain handle heat well. Quartz, solid surface and laminate can be marked by very hot pans. Using trivets protects any countertop.

Why do I have to choose my sink before the countertop is made?

Because sink, hob and tap cut-outs are cut in the factory to the exact size of the models you've chosen.

What is an undermount sink?

A sink fixed underneath the countertop, so the edge of the top is exposed and crumbs can be wiped straight in. It needs a solid material such as stone or quartz.

Can quartz countertops be used outdoors?

Most engineered quartz isn't designed for outdoor use, because sunlight can discolour it. Granite or porcelain is a better choice for outdoor kitchens and braai areas.

How long does it take to get new countertops?

After templating, cutting and polishing usually take a week or two before installation. Ask for the lead time when you get quotes.
