Fabric choices

Sunscreen fabrics cut glare and heat while letting you see out by day, which suits living areas and offices. Light-filtering fabrics soften the light. Blockout fabrics stop almost all light, which is what you want in a bedroom. Bear in mind that sunscreen fabrics work like one-way mirrors in reverse: at night, with the lights on inside, people can see in.

In bathrooms and kitchens, choose moisture-resistant materials, such as aluminium or PVC venetians and wipe-clean roller fabrics, rather than real wood, which can warp in steam.

Inside or outside the recess?

Inside-mounted blinds fit within the window recess for a neat, built-in look, but need enough depth for the blind and leave small light gaps at the sides. Outside-mounted blinds are fixed on the wall above and overlap the opening, which blocks more light and makes small windows look larger. Your window handles, burglar bars and recess depth often decide which is possible, and that's one reason a measure at your home matters.

Child safety and cords

Looped cords and chains on blinds are a strangulation risk for young children. Choose cordless or motorised blinds in children's rooms, fit cord tensioners or cleats that keep cords taut and out of reach, and keep cots and furniture away from windows with corded blinds. Ask your installer which child-safe options they offer.

Motorised blinds

Motorised blinds open and close at the touch of a button, on a timer or from your phone. They're especially useful for high or hard-to-reach windows, and remove cords altogether. Ask whether motors are battery or mains powered, and how batteries are recharged.

Cleaning and caring for blinds

Dust venetian slats regularly with a soft cloth or a vacuum brush, and wipe aluminium and PVC slats with a mild cleaner when needed. Most roller blind fabrics can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth; some can be removed for gentler cleaning. Ask the installer how your specific fabric should be cleaned, because harsh chemicals can damage sunscreen and blockout coatings.

What blinds costs

Aluminium venetians and vertical blinds are the cheapest at roughly R400 to R750 per m² fitted, with roller blinds at about R450 to R950. Wood and faux-wood venetians run from about R900 to R1,800 per m². A three-bedroom house with 8 to 12 windows typically spends somewhere between R8,000 and R30,000, depending on the styles chosen and whether any blinds are motorised.

Before you hire: a blinds checklist

Blinds are made to measure, so an accurate measure and a clear specification are what make quotes comparable.

  • Ask for a measure at your home

Blinds are made to the millimetre. Expect the installer to measure each window, and to check recess depth and handles.

  • Get the blind and fabric specified

Ask for the blind type, fabric or slat range, colour and mounting for each window.

  • Ask about child-safety options

Ask for cordless, motorised or tensioned cords, especially in children's rooms.

  • Check what's included in fitting

Ask whether fitting and removing old blinds or curtain tracks are included.

  • Ask about lead times

Made-to-measure blinds take time to manufacture. Ask how long between measuring and fitting.

  • Get the warranty terms

Ask what the warranty covers, such as mechanisms, cords and fabric, and for how long.

Before you request quotes

The questions people ask us most.

Is it really free?

Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.

Will I be flooded with calls?

No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.

Do I have to accept a quote?

No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.

Are the providers any good?

More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.

How quickly will I hear back?

The blind installers who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.

What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?

You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.

Is my information safe?

We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.

Blinds questions, answered

Which blinds are best for bedrooms?

Blockout roller or roman blinds stop almost all light. Fitting them outside the recess, overlapping the window, reduces light gaps at the sides.

Can people see through sunscreen blinds at night?

Yes. Sunscreen fabrics give privacy by day, but at night, with lights on inside, people can see in. Pair them with curtains or a blockout blind where night-time privacy matters.

What blinds work in a bathroom?

Moisture-resistant options, such as aluminium or PVC venetians and wipe-clean roller fabrics. Avoid real wood, which can warp in steam.

Are blind cords dangerous for children?

Looped cords and chains can be a strangulation risk. Choose cordless or motorised blinds for children's rooms, or fit cord tensioners that keep cords taut and out of reach.

Should blinds go inside or outside the window recess?

Inside looks neater but leaves light gaps; outside blocks more light and makes windows look bigger. Recess depth, handles and burglar bars often decide.

Are motorised blinds worth it?

They're ideal for high windows and remove cords entirely, which helps child safety. They cost more than manual blinds.
