How a kitchen project runs

A new kitchen brings several trades into one small room: the kitchen company, a plumber, an electrician, a tiler, and often a countertop supplier and gas installer. The order they work in decides how smoothly it goes.

  • Measure and design. The kitchen company measures the room and designs the layout, usually with 3D drawings so you can see it before it's built.
  • Strip-out. The old kitchen comes out, and any wall, plumbing or electrical changes are made while the room is empty.
  • Cabinet installation. Base and wall units are installed, levelled and fixed.
  • Countertop templating. Stone and quartz tops are measured off the installed cabinets, then cut in the factory. This usually takes a week or two, which is when kitchens sit without tops.
  • Tops, splashback and appliances. Countertops are fitted, then the splashback is tiled, and the sink, hob and appliances are connected.
  • Finishing. Handles, adjustments to doors and drawers, kickplates and silicone, and a final snag list.

Layouts and the work triangle

Good kitchen layouts keep the sink, the stove and the fridge within a few easy steps of each other, without people walking through the cooking area. The common layouts are the galley (two parallel runs), the L-shape, the U-shape, and layouts with an island. Your room shape largely decides which works; a good designer will also ask how you cook, how many people use the kitchen at once, and where you need space to put shopping down.

Moving the sink or stove to a different wall is possible, but means moving plumbing, drainage or gas, which adds cost. Keeping them roughly where they are is one of the easiest ways to keep a kitchen budget under control.

Cabinet materials

MaterialWorth knowing
Melamine on chipboardThe most common carcass material: affordable and easy to clean. Chipboard swells if water gets into raw edges, so edging quality matters, especially around the sink.
Moisture-resistant boardA better choice for sink units and humid kitchens; costs a little more.
Wrapped or sprayed doorsA smooth, seamless finish in matt or gloss. Sprayed doors give the most colour choice; quality varies.
Solid wood and veneerA warm, traditional look; more expensive and needs more care.

Hardware matters as much as the boards

Hinges and drawer runners are the parts you use thousands of times. Soft-close hinges and full-extension, soft-close runners from a reputable brand make a cheaper kitchen feel far better. Ask for the hardware brand on every quote.

Gas, electrics and plumbing

A gas hob or stove must be installed by a gas installer registered with SAQCC Gas, who must issue a Certificate of Conformity on completion. Insurers may not pay gas-related claims without one. New plug points, circuits for ovens and extractors, and lighting need an electrical certificate of compliance. Ask the kitchen company whether these trades are included and who coordinates them.

What kitchen installations costs

Published 2026 guides put a small kitchen at roughly R35,000 to R90,000, a mid-range kitchen at R70,000 to R150,000 and a premium kitchen from about R140,000 upwards. Cupboards are usually priced per linear metre, from around R4,700 for melamine to R20,000 for solid wood and premium finishes, with countertops extra.

Small kitchen, cupboards supplied and installed

Before you hire: a kitchen installations checklist

Kitchen quotes vary hugely, and the differences hide in materials, hardware and what's excluded. Get it all in writing.

  • Compare quotes on the same layout

Give every company the same layout, or at least the same list of units and appliances, so the prices can be compared.

  • Get materials and hardware specified

Ask for the carcass board, door finish and the hinge and runner brand. Two quotes for "white kitchen" can be very different products.

  • Check what's excluded

Countertops, appliances, splashback tiling, plumbing, electrics and removing the old kitchen are often separate. Ask for each to be listed.

  • Use registered trades for gas and electrics

Gas work needs an SAQCC Gas registered installer and a Certificate of Conformity; electrical work needs an electrical certificate of compliance.

  • See a finished kitchen

Ask to see a kitchen the company installed a year or more ago. Check the doors still hang straight and the edges around the sink are intact.

  • Agree a timeline and payment stages

Ask how long manufacture, installation and countertops will take, and tie payments to delivery and installation rather than paying everything up front.

Where these rules come from

Before you request quotes

The questions people ask us most.

Is it really free?

Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.

Will I be flooded with calls?

No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.

Do I have to accept a quote?

No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.

Are the providers any good?

More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.

How quickly will I hear back?

The kitchen companies who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.

What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?

You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.

Is my information safe?

We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.

Kitchen Installations questions, answered

How long does a new kitchen take to install?

The cabinets are usually installed in a few days, but the whole project, including manufacture, countertop templating and finishing, often takes several weeks. Ask for a written timeline.

Why does my kitchen have no countertops for a week or two?

Stone and quartz countertops are measured off the installed cabinets, then cut and polished in a factory. The wait between templating and fitting is normal.

Can I keep my old appliances?

Usually, yes. Give the kitchen company the exact sizes of any appliances you're keeping before the design is finalised.

Do I need a registered gas installer for a gas hob?

Yes. Gas installations must be done by an installer registered with SAQCC Gas, who must give you a Certificate of Conformity when the work is complete.

Is melamine good enough for a kitchen?

Good-quality melamine with well-sealed edges is durable and easy to clean, and most kitchens use it. Use moisture-resistant board for the sink unit, and choose good hinges and runners.

Can I move my sink to an island?

Yes, but it means running water supply and drainage under the floor to the island, which adds cost and may mean cutting into the slab. Ask for this to be priced separately.

What's a realistic way to save money on a new kitchen?

Keep the sink and stove where they are, use melamine carcasses with better doors and hardware, and choose standard unit sizes. Spend where you'll feel it every day: hinges, runners and countertops.
