Why heat water with the sun
Heating water is one of the largest electricity costs in most South African homes, because a geyser element draws a lot of power for hours every day. A solar water heater does most of that work with free energy, and the electric element only comes on when the sun can't keep up.
There are two ways in: a complete new system with its own tank, or a conversion that adds solar collectors and a small pump to the geyser you already have. Conversions cost less and suit geysers in good condition; a new system makes sense when the old geyser is near the end of its life.
Flat plate or evacuated tube?
| Flat plate collectors | Evacuated tube collectors | |
|---|---|---|
| How they work | A dark absorber plate under glass, with water or fluid running through it | Rows of glass tubes with a vacuum between the layers, which loses very little heat |
| Strengths | Robust and simple; sheds hail and dirt well | Performs well in cold weather and low winter sun |
| Watch out for | Loses more heat in very cold conditions | Individual tubes can break, for example in hail, though they can be replaced one at a time |
Direct or indirect: frost matters
In a direct system, the household water itself flows through the collectors. It's simpler and slightly more efficient, but if water freezes in the collectors on a winter night, it can burst them, and in hard-water areas scale builds up inside.
In an indirect system, a sealed loop of heat-transfer fluid with antifreeze runs through the collectors and passes its heat to your water through a heat exchanger. It costs more, but it doesn't freeze or scale up. In frost-prone areas, such as much of the Highveld and the interior, an indirect system or proper frost protection is essential. Ask every installer how their system handles frost where you live.
Placement and backup
Collectors work best facing north at a suitable tilt, without shade from trees or neighbouring buildings for most of the day. The installer should check your roof's orientation and structure before quoting.
Every solar geyser keeps an electric element as backup for cloudy days. Fitting a geyser timer or smart controller so the element only runs when it's needed, such as late in the afternoon after the sun has done its work, is where much of the saving comes from.
What solar geysers costs
A fully installed **150 litre solar geyser** costs about **R16,000 to R34,500**, and a **200 litre** system about **R20,000 to R42,500**, depending on collector type, brand and whether the system is direct or indirect. Adding solar collectors to an existing geyser that is still in good shape usually costs **R12,000 to R28,000** fitted.
- 150 litre solar geyser system, installed
- R16,000–R34,500 per project
- 200 litre solar geyser system, installed
- R20,000–R42,500 per project
- 300 litre solar geyser system, installed
- R28,000–R50,000 per project
- Thermal conversion of an existing 150 to 200 litre geyser, installed
- R12,000–R28,000 per project

Before you hire: a solar geysers checklist
A solar geyser joins your plumbing, your electrics and your roof, so it touches three kinds of compliance.
Use a registered plumber for the plumbing work
Ask whether the installer's plumber is registered with the Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB), and whether your municipality requires a plumbing certificate of compliance for the installation. Requirements vary by municipality, and insurers may ask for proof the work was done properly.
Ask about frost protection
Direct or indirect system? How is it protected from freezing? In frost areas, a vague answer is a red flag.
Get the electrical work certified
Wiring a pump, controller or new element needs to be done by a qualified electrician and covered by an electrical certificate of compliance.
Ask how the roof will be protected
Ask how collectors will be fixed, how penetrations will be sealed, and whether the roof can carry the weight of a system with a roof-mounted tank.
Ask for the expected saving
A good installer can estimate the electricity saving for your household size. Compare that against the price, not just the price alone.
Get warranties in writing
The collectors, tank, pump and workmanship usually carry separate warranties. Ask for each.

Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The solar geyser installers who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.
Is my information safe?
We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.
Solar Geysers questions, answered
Can I convert my existing geyser to solar?
Usually, yes, if the geyser is in good condition. A conversion adds roof collectors, a small circulation pump and a controller to your existing geyser. If the geyser is old, replacing it with a complete system may be better value.
Will a solar geyser work in winter?
Yes, but it produces less hot water when days are short and cold, and the electric backup element does more of the work. Evacuated tubes perform better than flat plates in cold weather.
What happens to a solar geyser in frost?
Direct systems can freeze and burst if they aren't protected. Indirect systems use a sealed antifreeze loop and don't freeze. In frost-prone areas, choose an indirect system or confirm the frost protection.
Do I need a plumbing certificate of compliance?
It depends on your municipality. The national requirement for electric geysers changed in 2022, and some municipalities set their own rules in their by-laws. Use a PIRB-registered plumber, and ask them what your municipality requires for a solar installation.
Is a solar geyser or a heat pump better?
Both cut water-heating costs substantially. A solar geyser has very low running costs but depends on sunshine and roof space. A heat pump works day and night, needs no roof, but uses some electricity. The best choice depends on your roof, climate and hot water use.
How much electricity will I save?
It depends on your household size, how much hot water you use, your climate and how the backup element is controlled. Ask installers for an estimate for your specific household.
