Registered pest control operators

Pest control is a regulated trade in South Africa. Under the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act, 1947, anyone who uses agricultural remedies, including pesticides, for reward or as part of a business must be registered as a pest control operator (PCO) with the national Department of Agriculture.

Operators are registered in specific fields, such as structural pest control (homes and buildings), fumigation, and wood treatment. Ask to see the registration certificate of the person treating your home, and check it covers the work: a termite treatment, for example, needs the right field of registration.

Beetle certificates when you sell

In coastal provinces, especially the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, sale agreements commonly require the seller to provide a certificate confirming the property is free of wood-destroying beetles. It isn't a requirement of national law; it comes from the sale agreement and, sometimes, the buyer's bank. An inspector checks accessible timber, including roof trusses, floors and door frames, and if beetles are found, treatment and repairs usually have to be done before the certificate is issued.

Book the inspection early in the selling process, because treatment and timber repairs can take time.

Safety around children and pets

Ask the operator what products they'll use, how long you, your children and pets need to stay out of treated areas, and how to protect fish tanks, food and pet bowls. A professional operator will explain this without being asked and leave written instructions.

Keeping pests away between treatments

Treatment works best alongside a few habits that make your home less inviting: store food in sealed containers, fix dripping taps and leaks, keep firewood and garden rubbish away from the house walls, and seal gaps around pipes, doors and roof eaves where rodents get in.

What pest control costs

A general treatment for cockroaches and ants typically costs R600 to R2,500 depending on the size of the home, and rodent control about R600 to R3,000. Termite soil treatment runs roughly R2,500 to R15,000, and a beetle certificate inspection for a property sale costs about R500 to R1,500 before any treatment.

Before you hire: a pest control checklist

Pest control is regulated, and the products are potentially harmful, so registration and clear instructions matter.

  • Check PCO registration

Ask for the operator's registration certificate under Act 36 of 1947, and check it covers the type of treatment, such as structural pest control or wood treatment.

  • Ask for an inspection first

Good operators identify the pest and how it's getting in before treating. Be wary of quotes given without an inspection.

  • Ask what products will be used

Ask for the products by name and how they're applied, and make sure they're registered for that use.

  • Get safety instructions in writing

Ask how long to stay out of treated rooms and how to protect children, pets, fish and food.

  • Ask about follow-ups and guarantees

Some pests, such as cockroaches and bedbugs, need repeat treatments. Ask how many visits are included and what's guaranteed.

  • Fix the cause where you can

Ask the operator how pests are getting in or what's attracting them, so you can seal gaps, fix leaks and remove food sources.

Before you request quotes

The questions people ask us most.

Is it really free?

Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.

Will I be flooded with calls?

No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.

Do I have to accept a quote?

No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.

Are the providers any good?

More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.

How quickly will I hear back?

The pest control companies who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.

What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?

You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.

Is my information safe?

We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.

Pest Control questions, answered

Does a pest control company need to be registered?

Yes. Anyone using pesticides for reward or as a business must be registered as a pest control operator under Act 36 of 1947, with the Department of Agriculture, in the right field for the work.

Do I need a beetle certificate to sell my house?

Not by national law, but sale agreements in coastal provinces, particularly the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, commonly require one. Check your sale agreement, and book the inspection early.

How do I know if I have termites?

Look for mud tunnels on walls and foundations, damaged skirtings and door frames, and hollow-sounding timber. A pest control operator can confirm and treat them.

Is pest control safe for children and pets?

When it's done properly and you follow the operator's instructions. Ask which products are used, how long to keep out of treated areas, and how to protect pets, fish and food.

Why do the cockroaches keep coming back?

Usually because food, water or entry points remain, or the treatment needed a follow-up. Ask your operator about repeat visits and how to remove what attracts them.

How long does a termite treatment last?

It depends on the method and product. Ask the operator for the expected protection period and the guarantee in writing.
