CCTV installers that work in your area contact you with a price.
Compare and choose
Weigh up price, timing and what's included. Accept the one that suits you, or none.
Start with what you want to see
The best CCTV systems are planned from the question "what do we need to see, and what for?", not from a number of cameras. Watching the gate so you can see who's ringing needs a different camera from identifying a face at the back door at night, or reading a number plate in the street.
Make a list of the places that matter: gates, driveways, entrances, the back of the house, the yard where tools are kept. A good installer will walk them with you and recommend a camera type and position for each.
Analogue HD or IP cameras
Upgrading an old analogue system to analogue HD can sometimes reuse existing cabling, which saves money. For a new installation, most installers now recommend IP.
| Analogue HD (coaxial) | IP (network) cameras | |
|---|---|---|
| How they connect | Coaxial cable to a digital video recorder (DVR) | Network cable to a network video recorder (NVR), often powering the camera on the same cable |
| Image detail | Good, and improving | Generally higher resolution, with sharper detail at a distance |
| Smart features | Basic motion detection | Person and vehicle detection, line crossing, better phone alerts |
| Cost | Usually cheaper | Usually more expensive, but the gap has narrowed |
Recording, storage and viewing
Footage is stored on a hard drive in the recorder. How many days you can keep depends on the number of cameras, the resolution, whether they record all the time or only on motion, and the size of the drive. Ask the installer how many days of footage the system will hold as quoted, and remember the recorder itself is valuable to a burglar: put it somewhere hidden or locked.
Phone viewing is standard on modern systems. It needs a reliable internet connection at the property, and remote viewing uses data, so ask what to expect on your connection. Change the default passwords on every device.
Night vision and lighting
Most cameras switch to infrared at night and record in black and white. Infrared range varies widely between models, and reflections off nearby walls can wash out the picture. Some cameras record in colour at night using a small white light or very sensitive sensors. Ask to see night-time footage from the cameras being quoted.
CCTV and privacy
Video of identifiable people is personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act. Point cameras at your own property, avoid looking into neighbours' yards or windows, and only record the street where you have a genuine security reason. Businesses should put up signs telling people that cameras are recording.
What CCTV costs
A **4-camera HD system** typically costs **R5,000 to R12,000** installed, and an **8-camera system** about **R10,000 to R20,000** at the budget end. Higher-resolution IP cameras with person and vehicle detection lift a 4-camera job to roughly **R12,000 to R28,000**. Installation labour runs about R150 to R700 per camera point.

Before you hire: a CCTV checklist
Installing CCTV for payment is a regulated security service, and a camera system is only as good as its planning and installation.
Check PSIRA registration
Installing security equipment such as CCTV for payment is a security service under the Private Security Industry Regulation Act, and the installer must be registered with PSIRA.
Ask for camera positions on a plan
A list of "8 cameras" means little. Ask where each camera goes and what it's meant to show.
Ask how many days of footage you'll keep
Recording time depends on the drive size and camera settings. Get the number of days in writing.
Ask for makes, models and resolution
So you can compare like with like, and check that the cameras and recorder are from a reputable brand with ongoing support.
Keep the system running in a power cut
Ask whether a small UPS for the recorder and cameras is included. Without one, the system goes blind when the power goes off.
Insist on secure set-up
Default passwords should be changed, firmware updated, and the app set up on your phone before the installer leaves.

Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The CCTV installers who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.
Is my information safe?
We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.
CCTV questions, answered
How many cameras do I need?
It depends on your property and what you need to see. Start with the entrances and the routes someone would take to reach the house. A site visit from an installer will give you a realistic number.
Can I watch my cameras on my phone?
Yes, almost all modern systems have an app. It needs a stable internet connection at the property, and viewing uses mobile data when you're away from Wi-Fi.
How long is footage kept?
It depends on the hard drive size, the number of cameras and how they record. Most systems overwrite the oldest footage automatically. Ask the installer how many days your system will store.
Does my CCTV installer need to be registered?
Yes. Installing security equipment such as CCTV for payment is a security service under the Private Security Industry Regulation Act, so the installer must be registered with PSIRA.
Can I point a camera at the street?
Video of people is personal information under POPIA, so keep recording to what you need for security. Focus cameras on your own property and avoid filming neighbours' homes.
Will my cameras work when the power goes off?
Only if the recorder and cameras have backup power. A UPS keeps them running through short outages; ask for one to be included in the quote.
