What ClearVu fencing is
ClearVu is the trade name most South Africans use for high-security welded mesh fencing, often called clearview fencing. Its openings are too narrow for fingers or toes to get a grip, so it's very hard to climb, and the heavy, closely spaced wire is slow to cut with hand tools.
The most common specification is known as 358 mesh: openings of about 3 inches by half an inch, welded from 8-gauge wire. You'll see it around schools, estates and businesses, and increasingly around homes.
ClearVu, palisade or a wall?
See-through fencing has a real security benefit: neighbours, patrols and passing traffic can see onto the property, and an intruder can't work unseen behind it. Its downside is privacy, which some owners solve with planting on the inside of the fence.
| ClearVu mesh | Palisade | Solid wall | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Climbing | Very difficult | Possible using the horizontal rails | Depends on height and coping |
| Cutting | Slow with hand tools | Pales can be cut or bent | Not applicable |
| Visibility | See-through | See-through | Hides the property completely |
| Look | Clean and modern | Industrial | Can be plastered and painted |
What makes it last
Mesh fencing is only as durable as its corrosion protection. Panels are usually hot-dip galvanised, often with a powder coat on top for colour and extra protection. Near the coast, where salt air attacks steel, the coating matters even more: ask what's specified and whether the coating has a written guarantee.
The posts and fixings are the other weak point. Posts should be set in concrete footings deep enough for the height of the fence, and the panels fixed with clamps or tamper-resistant fasteners that can't simply be unscrewed from the outside.
Choosing the height
Mesh fencing panels are made in a range of heights, commonly from about 1.8 m up to 3 m for high-security sites. Higher is harder to get over, but height has rules attached: under the National Building Regulations, a free-standing fence up to 1.8 m high counts as minor building work, while anything taller needs plans and approval from the municipality. Estates often set their own limits too.
For most homes, a fence close to the 1.8 m limit with electric strands on top gives a strong barrier without the approval process. Ask the contractor to show you the options side by side, with the approval implications of each.
Gates and toppings
A fence is only as secure as its weakest gap. ClearVu systems can include matching pedestrian and driveway gates, which can be motorised. Many owners add electric strands or razor wire on top for an extra deterrent; electric fencing on top needs its own certificate of compliance.
What ClearVu fencing costs
A 1.8 m run of 358 anti-climb mesh, supplied and fitted, usually costs about R1,000 to R1,400 per metre, and a 2.4 m panel about R1,300 to R1,700 per metre. A pedestrian gate adds roughly R2,500 to R8,500, and spikes or razor wire along the top another R20 to R100 per metre. These figures are a guide from limited published data, mostly contractor price pages.
- 358 mesh, 1.8 m high, supplied and installed
- R1,000–R1,400/metre
- 358 mesh, 2.4 m high, supplied and installed
- R1,300–R1,700/metre
- Mesh panels and posts only, 1.8 m to 2.4 m (no installation)
- R620–R1,150/metre
- Matching pedestrian gate
- R2,500–R8,500 per unit

Before you hire: a ClearVu fencing checklist
All mesh fencing looks similar on a quote, so you need the specification in writing to compare prices fairly.
Get the mesh specification
Ask for the mesh type (for example 358), the wire thickness and the panel height. Cheaper mesh with larger openings is easier to climb.
Ask about the corrosion protection
Hot-dip galvanised, powder-coated, or both? Ask for the guarantee on the coating, particularly near the coast.
Check the post footings
Ask how deep the post footings will be and how they're set. Posts that move are the start of a fence that sags.
Ask how panels are fixed
Tamper-resistant fixings stop panels being unbolted from outside. Ask what's used.
Include gates in the same quote
Matching gates, and any gate motor, should be priced with the fence so the whole boundary is covered.
Check boundary lines and estate rules
Confirm where your boundary is before posts go in, and whether your estate or complex has fencing rules.

Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The fencing contractors who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.

ClearVu Fencing questions, answered
What is the difference between ClearVu and clearview fencing?
ClearVu is the trade name commonly used for high-security welded mesh fencing; clearview is the general term. Both describe the same type of see-through, anti-climb mesh fence.
What does 358 mesh mean?
It describes the mesh: openings of about 3 inches by half an inch, welded from 8-gauge wire. The narrow openings make it very hard to climb and slow to cut.
Is ClearVu more secure than palisade?
Generally, yes. Palisade has horizontal rails that can be used as footholds, and pales can be cut or forced apart. ClearVu mesh offers no footholds and takes much longer to cut through.
Will ClearVu fencing rust at the coast?
Steel rusts in salt air if its coating fails. Hot-dip galvanising with a powder coat on top gives the best protection. Ask for the coating specification and guarantee.
Can I add an electric fence on top?
Yes. Electric strands on top of mesh fencing are common. The electric fence needs its own certificate of compliance from a registered electric fence installer.
How can I get privacy with a see-through fence?
Many owners plant a hedge or climbers on the inside. It keeps the security benefits of a see-through fence from the street side while screening the garden.
