Carport roof options
| Roof | Protects against | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Shade net | Sun and UV, light rain | The most affordable and quickest to install. Lets some rain through, and offers little protection against hail. The net eventually needs replacing. |
| Steel sheeting (IBR or corrugated) | Sun, rain and hail | Solid protection. Can be noisy in rain, and the structure has to carry the heavier roof. |
| Polycarbonate sheeting | Sun, rain and some hail | Lets light through while blocking rain. Choose UV-protected sheets, and tinted ones to cut heat. |
| Timber pergola style | Varies with the covering | Looks good attached to the house, but needs a proper roof covering for weather protection, and timber needs maintenance. |
Freestanding or attached?
Freestanding carports stand on their own posts and can go anywhere on the property. Attached carports fix to the house wall on one side, which saves posts and looks more integrated, but the connection has to be designed so it doesn't damage the wall or let water in where the roof meets it.
Cantilever designs, with posts on one side only, make parking easier and suit narrow driveways, but need heavier steel and deeper footings to resist wind.
Approvals and building lines
Under the National Building Regulations, an open-sided carport of up to 40 m² can count as minor building work: no full building plans are needed, but you must still get the municipality's authorisation before building it. A carport with enclosed sides doesn't qualify, and needs plans.
Most properties also have building lines, set distances from the boundaries that structures may not cross without the municipality's permission. Carports are often planned right at the front boundary, which is where building lines bite. Check yours, and your estate or complex rules, before you choose a size and position.
Structure and wind
A carport roof acts like a sail. Strong winds, and the uplift of wind under the roof, are what bring poorly built carports down. The posts need proper footings, and the roof must be fixed securely to the structure. In windy and coastal areas, galvanised or powder-coated steel and stainless fixings hold up best.
Solar panels on a carport
A carport roof can double as a mounting surface for solar panels, which is useful when the house roof faces the wrong way or is shaded. Panels add weight and wind load, so the structure must be designed for them from the start; a carport built for shade net can't simply have panels bolted on later. If you're considering solar, tell the carport installers before they quote, and remember the solar system itself needs a certificate of compliance and usually municipal registration.
What carports costs
Installed shade net carports cost roughly R8,000 to R15,000 for one car and R10,500 to R28,000 for two. Steel or aluminium carports with sheeted roofs run about R17,000 to R35,000 for one car and R26,000 to R35,000 for a standard double. A concrete slab, lighting and plan fees can add several thousand rand.
- Shade net carport, single (about 3 m × 5 m to 3 m × 6 m), installed
- R8,000–R15,000 per unit
- Shade net carport, double (about 5.5 m × 5 m to 6 m × 6 m), installed
- R10,500–R28,000 per unit
- Steel or aluminium carport with IBR or similar roofing, single

Before you hire: a carports checklist
A carport is a small structure, but it still has to stand up to wind, hail and the municipality.
Check the approval route first
Ask whether your carport qualifies as minor building work, who will apply for the municipality's authorisation, and whether it's within your building lines.
Ask about footings and steel sizes
Get the post sizes and footing depths in writing. Undersized posts and shallow footings are what fail in strong wind.
Ask what the roof will protect against
If hail protection matters, shade net won't do it. Make sure the roof you're quoted for matches what you need.
Check the finish on the steel
Ask whether the steel is galvanised, painted or powder-coated, especially near the coast.
Ask how rainwater will drain
Solid roofs shed a lot of water. Ask where it will run off, and whether gutters are included.
Get the guarantee in writing
Ask what's guaranteed on the structure, the roof covering and the workmanship, and for how long.
Where these rules come from
- Minor building work (carports up to 40 m²), SANS 10400 Building Regulations
Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The carport installers who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.
Is my information safe?
We handle your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and share it only with the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and your rights.
Carports questions, answered
Do I need plans for a carport?
An open-sided carport of up to 40 m² can count as minor building work, which needs the municipality's authorisation but not full building plans. Carports with enclosed sides need plans. Check building lines and estate rules too.
Will a shade-net carport protect my car from hail?
Not reliably. Shade net blocks sun and UV, but hail can come through or damage it. For hail protection, choose steel or polycarbonate sheeting.
Can a carport be attached to my house?
Yes. The connection has to be designed so it doesn't damage the wall and doesn't let water in where the roof meets the house.
How long does a carport take to install?
Often only a few days on site, once the footings have set. Manufacturing the steel and getting the municipality's authorisation can take longer than the installation.
What size carport do I need?
It depends on your cars and how much room you need to open doors and walk around them. Measure your vehicles and driveway, and ask installers for standard sizes that fit.
Why do carports blow over?
Usually because the footings are too shallow, the posts too light, or the roof isn't fixed well enough to resist wind uplift. Ask about all three before you buy.
