What palisade fencing is
Palisade is the familiar steel fence of vertical pales, usually with pointed or split tops, bolted to horizontal rails between upright posts. It's strong, see-through, relatively quick to install, and one of the most cost-effective ways to secure a long boundary.
The pales come in different profiles. D-section pales are lighter and common on homes. W-section pales are folded into a stiffer W shape and are harder to bend or cut, so they're used where security matters more. Both come with triple-pointed or split tops that make climbing over uncomfortable.
Galvanised, painted or powder-coated
Bare steel rusts, so how palisade is protected decides how long it looks good and how long it lasts.
| Finish | What it is | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-dip galvanised | Steel dipped in molten zinc, which bonds to the surface | Long-lasting protection with a dull grey finish. The usual baseline for a quality fence. |
| Galvanised and powder-coated | Galvanised steel with a baked-on coloured coating | The most durable option and the best looking, in black, green or other colours. Costs more. |
| Painted mild steel | Primer and paint over plain steel | Cheapest up front, but needs repainting and rusts where the paint is chipped. |
Near the coast
Salt air shortens the life of every steel fence. In coastal areas, galvanised and powder-coated palisade is worth the extra cost; painted mild steel can show rust within a season or two.
Installation that lasts
A palisade fence is only as straight as its posts. Posts are set in concrete footings at regular spacing, and the depth needed grows with the height of the fence. On sloping ground the fence is either stepped, with each panel level, or raked to follow the slope; ask which suits your boundary and how gaps underneath will be closed.
The panels are fixed to the rails with bolts. Anti-theft or welded bolts, or bolts with the threads burred over, stop the panels being unbolted from outside, which is a common way palisade is stolen or breached.
Gates and add-ons
Matching sliding or swing gates keep the boundary consistent, and can be fitted with gate motors. Many owners add electric strands on brackets above the palisade, which adds height and a deterrent. An electric fence needs its own certificate of compliance from a registered electric fence installer.
What palisade fencing costs
Published 2026 price lists put installed steel palisade at about **R900 to R1,430 per metre at 1.2 m**, **R1,200 to R2,450 at around 1.8 m** and **R2,000 to R3,300 at 2.4 m**. A manual sliding palisade gate adds roughly R8,500 to R15,000. These figures are a guide from limited published data, so confirm them with written quotes.

Before you hire: a palisade fencing checklist
Palisade quotes are easy to compare once you have the same details from every contractor.
Get the specification in writing
Ask for the pale profile (D or W section), the steel thickness, the fence height and the finish. Without them, prices can't be compared.
Ask about the finish and its guarantee
Hot-dip galvanised, powder-coated or painted? Ask how long the finish is guaranteed against rust.
Ask how panels are secured
Anti-theft bolts or burred threads stop panels being unbolted from the street side.
Check post footings and spacing
Ask how deep the footings will be and how far apart the posts are. Fences on shallow footings lean within a few years.
Agree how slopes and gaps will be handled
Ask whether the fence will be stepped or raked and how gaps under the bottom rail will be closed.
Confirm your boundary first
Make sure you know exactly where your boundary pegs are before posts go in, and check any estate or complex rules on fence style.
Where these rules come from
- Minor building work, SANS 10400 Building Regulations
Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The fencing contractors who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.

Palisade Fencing questions, answered
How long does palisade fencing last?
It depends mainly on the finish and the climate. Hot-dip galvanised and powder-coated palisade lasts many years; painted mild steel needs regular repainting, and rusts quickly near the coast.
What is the difference between D-section and W-section palisade?
The shape of the pale. D-section pales are lighter and common on homes. W-section pales are folded into a stiffer W shape that is harder to bend or cut, so they're used where security matters more.
Is palisade or ClearVu better for security?
ClearVu mesh is generally harder to climb and cut. Palisade is still a strong barrier, especially with W-section pales and electric strands on top, and usually costs less per metre.
Can palisade be installed on a slope?
Yes. It's either stepped, with each panel level, or raked to follow the slope. Ask the contractor how they'll close any gaps under the bottom rail.
Can I add an electric fence to palisade?
Yes, electric strands on brackets are often added above palisade. The electric fence needs its own certificate of compliance from a registered electric fence installer.
Do I need approval for a palisade fence?
Free-standing fences up to 1.8 m high count as minor building work under the National Building Regulations: no plans are needed, but the municipality may still need to authorise the work. Higher fences, and estate rules, can need more.
