Gunite or fibreglass?
Almost every new home pool in South Africa is either a gunite pool, built on site, or a fibreglass shell, made in a factory and dropped into a hole. They suit different plots and budgets.
| Gunite (sprayed concrete) | Fibreglass shell | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape and size | Any shape and depth; designed for your plot | Limited to the moulds available, and to what can be transported on a truck |
| Build time | Weeks: excavation, steel, spraying, curing and finishing | Days once the hole is dug and the shell delivered |
| Finish | Marbelite or a pebble finish that's eventually redone | Smooth gelcoat that resists algae; can fade or blister over time |
| Access | Concrete is pumped or sprayed in, so access is easier | The shell is craned in, so there must be a clear route from the street |
Approvals
A new pool is building work, and most municipalities need plans before construction starts. Ask whether the pool builder handles the submission, and don't let excavation begin before approval if your municipality requires it.
Renovating an existing pool
A rough, stained or leaking pool often doesn't need replacing. The usual renovation work is:
- Resurfacing. Marbelite wears rough and porous with age. The pool is drained, the old surface prepared or removed, and a new marbelite or pebble finish applied. The new surface needs careful filling and water balancing afterwards.
- Repairing leaks. If you're topping up more than evaporation explains, find the leak before resurfacing. Many specialists use pressure testing on the pipes and dye tests around fittings.
- Coping and tiling. Loose coping stones and missing waterline tiles let water in behind the shell. Re-bedding them is usually part of a resurface.
- Equipment. Pumps, filters and chlorinators wear out. Upgrading the pump is often the single biggest saving on running costs.
Pumps, filters and running costs
A pool pump can run for many hours a day, all year, which makes it one of the larger electricity users in a home with a pool. A variable-speed pump runs slowly most of the time and only speeds up for backwashing or cleaning, and uses much less electricity than a single-speed pump doing the same job. It costs more to buy, so ask for the expected running cost alongside the price.
Salt chlorinators make chlorine from dissolved salt, so there's less chlorine to buy and handle. They still need the water balanced and the cell cleaned. Heat pumps and solar heating extend the swimming season; a cover keeps the heat in overnight either way.
Pool safety
A child can drown quickly and silently in a home pool. The National Sea Rescue Institute recommends layers of protection: a fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate, and a safety net or a solid safety cover, plus adult supervision.
The SANS 10134 standard sets requirements for pool safety covers, nets and barriers, and many municipalities have their own by-laws on pool safety. Ask your pool company which covers and nets meet the standard, and check your municipality's rules before you build.
What swimming pools costs
Published 2026 guides put a standard fibreglass pool at roughly R80,000 to R350,000 installed and a concrete (gunite) pool at about R150,000 to R350,000, with custom designs well beyond that. Resurfacing an average home pool costs about R15,000 to R50,000, and a salt chlorinator adds R4,000 to R22,000.
- Fibreglass pool, standard family size, installed
- R80,000–R350,000 per project
- Gunite (concrete) pool, standard family size, installed
- R150,000–R350,000 per project
- Resurfacing with marbelite or fibreglass
- R15,000–R50,000 per project
- Salt chlorinator, supplied and installed
- R4,000–R22,000 per unit

Before you hire: a swimming pools checklist
Pool building has no trade registration either, and a pool is one of the larger sums you'll spend on a home. Choose on track record, and check exactly what's in the price.
Visit a pool they built a few years ago
A new pool always looks good. One that's three or four years old shows how the finish, coping and equipment have held up.
Get the full scope in writing
Excavation and rubble removal, steel, plumbing, equipment, coping, paving around the pool and the first fill of water can all be quoted separately. Make sure you know which are included.
Ask who handles plans and approval
If the municipality needs plans, find out who draws and submits them, and what happens to the timeline if approval takes longer than expected.
Check access before you sign
Excavators, concrete trucks or a crane need a way in. Ask whether walls, gates or plants might need to be removed, and who puts them back.
Ask for the equipment by make and model
A pump or filter described only by its type can't be compared. Ask for the make, model and expected running cost.
Include safety from the start
Ask for a safety net or cover that meets SANS 10134 to be quoted with the pool, and plan the fence and gate before landscaping goes in.
Stage payments to progress
Pay in stages tied to completed work, such as excavation, shell, finishing and commissioning, rather than a large amount up front.

Before you request quotes
The questions people ask us most.
Is it really free?
Yes. Requesting quotes costs you nothing. The providers pay to receive requests, which is how the service is funded.
Will I be flooded with calls?
No. Your details go only to the providers quoting on your job, up to 3 of them.
Do I have to accept a quote?
No. Compare the quotes, ask questions, and accept one if it suits you. If none do, you don't have to go ahead.
Are the providers any good?
More than 200 registered service providers quote through our network. Compare quotes carefully, ask for references and photos of past work, and use the checklist on each service page before you hire.
How quickly will I hear back?
The pool builders who quote on your job contact you directly by phone or email.
What if I'm not happy with any of the quotes?
You don't have to accept any of them. If the prices are all higher than you expected, ask each provider what's driving the cost. The answers often show what the job really needs.
Is my information safe?

Swimming Pools questions, answered
Do I need plans for a new swimming pool?
In most municipalities, yes: a pool is treated as building work. Check with your municipality before work starts, and ask your pool builder whether they handle the plans and submission.
How long does a new pool take to build?
A fibreglass pool can go in within days once the hole is dug. A gunite pool takes weeks, because the concrete must cure before the finish is applied. Weather and approvals affect both.
How often does a pool need resurfacing?
It depends on the finish, the water balance and how well the pool is looked after. Marbelite gradually becomes rough and porous, and when it starts to stain and hold algae, it's usually time to resurface.
Why is my pool losing water?
Some loss is evaporation, especially on hot, windy days. If you're topping up much more than that, there may be a leak in the shell, around fittings or in the pipework. A leak detection specialist can find it before you spend money on resurfacing.
Is a salt chlorinator worth it?
Many owners prefer it: less chlorine to buy and store, and water that feels softer. It doesn't remove the need to test and balance the water, and the cell needs cleaning and eventually replacing.
What's the best way to make a pool safe for children?
Use layers: a fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate, a safety net or solid safety cover, and constant adult supervision. Ask for covers and nets that meet SANS 10134, and check your municipality's by-laws.
Can I heat my pool cheaply?
A pool cover alone keeps a lot of heat in overnight. For real heating, a heat pump or solar heating is far cheaper to run than an electric element.
