Local black granite such as Rustenburg is the cheapest option at roughly R1,500 to R2,750 per m² fitted. Greys, creams and Kalahari-type stones sit around R2,200 to R3,000, while Zimbabwe Black, African Tapestry and Ivory Coast run from about R3,000 to R4,500. A standard kitchen of about 3.6 m² usually lands between R7,000 and R20,000 once cut-outs, travel and removal of the old tops are added.
| What | Typical price | Notes |

| Rustenburg and other standard local black granite, installed | R1,500–R2,750/m² | The entry point for granite. Prices from 2026 supplier and aggregator pages, mostly with fitting included. |
| Mid-range colours (greys, creams, Kalahari Spring, Crema Grigio), installed | R2,200–R3,000/m² | |
| Premium colours (Zimbabwe Black, African Tapestry, Ivory Coast), installed | R3,000–R4,500/m² | One Gauteng fabricator lists Zimbabwe Black at R4,350 per m² and African Tapestry at R4,500 per m², both including VAT and standard installation. |
| Slab only, 600 mm deep (no cutting, fitting or delivery) | R795–R1,895/metre | A Gauteng supplier's VAT-inclusive specials, from Rustenburg at the bottom to Zimbabwe Black at the top. Fabrication and installation are extra. |
| Sink, hob or basin cut-out | R200–R330 per unit | Some fabricators include standard cut-outs in their m² rate. Ask. |
| Decorative edge profile (bevel, ogee, full bullnose) | R200–R500/metre | From a single published price list. A plain pencil or straight edge is usually included. |
| Travel and delivery to site | R900–R2,700 per trip | One fabricator charges R900 up to 50 km, R1,800 up to 100 km and R2,700 up to 150 km. |
| Strengthening cabinets to carry the weight | R1,000–R2,000 per project |

Granite is sold in two ways in South Africa. Some yards quote per square metre installed, which folds the stone, cutting, polishing and fitting into one rate. Others quote per linear metre of a standard 600 mm deep top, sometimes for the slab alone. A linear metre at that depth is 0.6 m², so R1,200 per linear metre works out to R2,000 per m². Convert every quote to the same unit before you compare them.
The colour of the stone matters more than anything else. Rustenburg granite is quarried locally, plentiful and cheap. Exotic and imported stones cost two or three times as much for the same kitchen. Thickness affects price less than you might expect: one 2026 Gauteng fabricator charges the same for 20 mm and 30 mm.
The figures here come from 2025 and 2026 fabricator price lists and two South African cost aggregators. Two of the suppliers state that their prices include VAT. The aggregators don't say, so check this on every quote. If you're still deciding between granite, quartz and laminate, our countertop cost guide compares the materials.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- Exotic or imported colours. Moving from Rustenburg to Zimbabwe Black or African Tapestry can nearly double the m² rate.
- Book-matched joins and long runs. Matching the veining across a join, or fitting an island too big for one slab, means more waste and more careful cutting.
- Shaped edges. Ogee and full bullnose profiles take more machine and polishing time, at roughly R200 to R500 per metre extra.
- Undermount sinks. The cut-out edge has to be polished because it stays visible, which costs more than a drop-in cut-out.
- Distance and access. Travel fees rise with distance, and an upstairs flat or a narrow passage can mean extra hands to carry the slabs.
- Weak cabinets. Granite is heavy. Bracing or replacing carcasses adds about R1,000 to R2,000.
Brings the price down
- Choosing a local stone. Rustenburg and other South African blacks are the best-value granites by a wide margin.
- Using a yard's specials. Suppliers often discount slow-moving colours. One Gauteng yard had R300 to R400 off per linear metre in late 2026.
- A simple layout. A straight run with one sink cut-out needs fewer joins and less cutting than an L-shape with an island.
- Keeping the standard edge. A pencil or eased edge is normally part of the base price.
- Using offcuts for small jobs. Vanities, windowsills and braai tops can sometimes be cut from remnants at a lower price.
A 3.6 m² kitchen: a worked example
Picture a kitchen with 6 linear metres of 600 mm deep worktop, which is 3.6 m², one sink cut-out and one hob cut-out. The old laminate tops have to come out first. The fabricator is 60 km away. Here's how that prices out using the ranges on this page.
- Rustenburg granite: 3.6 m² × R1,500 to R2,750 = R5,400 to R9,900
- Or Zimbabwe Black: 3.6 m² × R3,000 to R4,500 = R10,800 to R16,200
- Two cut-outs: 2 × R200 to R330 = R400 to R660 (if not included)
- Travel: R900 to R1,800
- Removing the old tops: about R500 to R1,000
- Estimated total in Rustenburg: roughly R7,200 to R13,400
- Estimated total in Zimbabwe Black: roughly R12,600 to R19,700
What isn't in that figure
Reconnecting the sink and the hob is normally a separate job for a plumber and an electrician. A granite splashback or upstand is also extra and is priced like the tops, by area.
Per m² or per linear metre? Reading granite quotes
A low number per linear metre can look cheaper than a high number per m² when it's actually the same price. And a slab-only price can look like a bargain until fabrication, fitting and delivery are added. Before you compare, ask each supplier to confirm:
- Whether the price is per m² or per linear metre, and at what depth
- Whether cutting, polishing, installation and VAT are included
- The exact stone name and slab thickness
- Which edge profile is included and what other profiles cost
- How many cut-outs are included and whether undermount polishing is extra
- The travel or delivery fee for your address
- Whether wastage is charged on top of the measured area
Granite vanities and smaller pieces
Bathroom vanities use the same stones and the same m² rates, but small jobs carry the same fixed costs as big ones: the template visit, travel and at least one basin cut-out. Those costs make up a bigger share of a small bill, so a single 1.2 m vanity costs more per m² than a kitchen does.
If you're doing a kitchen at the same time, ask for the vanity on the same order. It can often be cut from the leftover slab and fitted on the same trip.
Ongoing costs: sealing
Darker, dense granites like Rustenburg barely need sealing. Lighter, more open-grained stones should be resealed from time to time. One cost aggregator puts a professional reseal at about R200 to R500 per visit. Do-it-yourself sealer costs less, but test the stone first so you're not paying for a job it doesn't need.
Do prices differ by region?
One 2026 cost guide gives slightly different installed ranges by city: about R1,500 to R3,000 per m² in Johannesburg, R1,800 to R3,500 in Sandton, R1,600 to R2,800 in Cape Town and R1,500 to R2,700 in Durban. Travel fees depend on how far you are from the yard, so out-of-town addresses pay more on that line.

What is the cheapest granite in South Africa?
Rustenburg black granite is consistently the lowest-priced granite on South African price lists. One 2026 Gauteng supplier sells the slab from R795 per linear metre, and a fabricator quotes it installed from R2,400 per m² including VAT. Other local blacks and greys are close behind. Imported and exotic stones cost considerably more.
Is 30 mm granite more expensive than 20 mm?
Not always. One Gauteng fabricator charges the same for 20 mm and 30 mm, and a supplier lists its specials at the same price for either thickness. Other price lists do charge more for thicker slabs. A 20 mm top is lighter and is often finished with a thicker laminated edge to look heavier, so ask which option each quote assumes.
Why do granite quotes for the same kitchen differ so much?
Usually because they aren't quoting the same thing. One might be per linear metre without fitting, another per m² with VAT, cut-outs and a standard edge included. The stone itself may differ too, since names like 'black granite' cover several grades. Ask every supplier for the stone name, unit, inclusions and travel fee in writing.
Is granite cheaper than quartz?
Local granite usually is. Rustenburg at about R1,500 to R2,750 per m² installed undercuts most engineered quartz. Exotic granites overlap with mid-range and premium quartz, so the cheapest option depends on the colour you want. Our [countertop cost guide](/cost-guides/kitchen-countertops) sets out the ranges for each material.
Do granite prices include VAT?
Two of the suppliers we used say their prices include VAT. The cost aggregators don't say either way. A VAT-registered company must add 15%, which is about R1,500 on a R10,000 kitchen, so ask each quote to show VAT clearly.
