Installed kitchen countertops in South Africa range from roughly R450 per m² for postformed laminate to R2,200–R6,000 per m² for engineered quartz, with granite usually in between at R1,500–R4,500 per m². A typical 2.5 m² replacement can therefore cost anything from about R1,100 in laminate to R15,000 or more in quartz, before removal of the old tops and extras.
| What | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Postformed laminate (installed) | R450–R1,500/m² | Published installed rates run from R450 to R1,500. Off-the-shelf tops from Leroy Merlin cost R1,355 to R3,095 each (2.46 m to 3.6 m long), supply only. |
| Solid timber or butcher block | R1,200–R3,000/m² | Two sources: one gives R1,200 to R3,000, the other R1,200 to R1,800. Species, thickness and finish set where you land. |
| Granite (installed) | R1,500–R4,500/m² | Common local colours cost around R2,300 to R2,400; imported and exotic slabs reach R4,500. See the granite cost guide for detail. |
| Engineered quartz (installed) | R2,200–R6,000/m² | Standard colours are usually R2,700 to R3,500. Premium brands and pure whites push towards the upper figure. |
| Solid surface, e.g. Corian (installed) | R1,800–R2,400/m² | From one published source only. |
| Sintered stone, e.g. Dekton or Neolith | R3,200–R8,000/m² | Two sources disagree on the upper end (R4,800 vs R8,000), so the range is wide. |
| Removing and disposing of old tops | R3,000–R10,000 per project | One published figure. Some fabricators include simple removals in their price. |
| Sink or hob cut-out | R200–R330 per unit | Some stone suppliers include standard cut-outs in their m² rate. |

Countertops are priced by area, so the first number to work out is how many square metres you need. A standard top is 600 mm deep. Every running metre of counter is therefore about 0.6 m², and an island or breakfast bar adds a deeper slab on top of that.
Material then multiplies that area by a factor of ten or more. Laminate is the cheapest surface you can buy, while engineered quartz and sintered stone sit at the top of the market. Granite fills the middle, and timber and solid surface overlap with the cheaper granites.
These figures are a guide from limited published data. Most come from South African fabricator and contractor price pages dated 2025 and 2026, and few say whether VAT is included. Ask every supplier to confirm VAT, installation and cut-outs in writing before you compare quotes.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- Premium quartz colours, especially bright whites and marble-look veining, cost noticeably more than plain greys and creams.
- Islands and wide breakfast bars need bigger slabs, which can mean more waste and an extra join.
- Undermount sinks and flush induction hobs need polished, precise cut-outs that some suppliers charge for separately.
- Thick or built-up edges, mitred waterfall ends and full-height splashbacks add fabrication time and material.
- Restricted access, such as upper floors or narrow stairwells, can mean extra hands or lifting equipment on installation day.
- Long distances from the fabricator's workshop bring travel charges; one Limpopo supplier adds R900 to R2,700 depending on distance.
Brings the price down
- Choosing laminate or a standard local granite instead of quartz can halve the cost of the same layout.
- Keeping the existing sink and hob positions avoids plumbing and electrical changes.
- A straight run or simple L-shape uses slabs more efficiently than a U-shape with an island.
- Standard edge profiles such as pencil round or half bullnose are often included at no extra charge.
- Ordering off-the-shelf laminate lengths for a small kitchen keeps material cost to a few thousand rand.
Swapping the tops on a 4.2 m kitchen: three budgets
Take a kitchen with 4.2 running metres of counter at the standard 600 mm depth. That is 4.2 × 0.6 = 2.52 m². Using the installed ranges above, here is what the same layout costs in three materials:
- Laminate: 2.52 m² × R450 to R1,500 = about R1,130 to R3,780.
- Solid timber: 2.52 m² × R1,200 to R3,000 = about R3,020 to R7,560.
- Engineered quartz: 2.52 m² × R2,200 to R6,000 = about R5,540 to R15,120.
What to add on top
Add a sink cut-out at R200 to R330 if it isn't included, and allow R3,000 to R10,000 if your old tops need to be removed and carted away. A plumber to reconnect the sink and an electrician for a built-in hob are usually separate bookings. In this example, a quartz job could land anywhere from roughly R9,000 to over R25,000 all in, while laminate might stay under R8,000.
Which material gives the best value for your budget?
Price per square metre is only part of value. Laminate is cheap to replace later, but a burnt or chipped top can't be repaired. Stone and quartz cost more up front and last for decades. If you plan to sell within a few years, a mid-range stone often makes more sense than a premium slab. For granite colours and grades in detail, see our granite countertop cost guide.
| If your budget is… | Look at |
|---|---|
| Under R1,000 per m² | Postformed laminate |
| R1,200 to R2,400 per m² | Timber, solid surface or entry-level granite |
| R2,300 to R3,500 per m² | Standard granite or standard quartz |
| Above R3,500 per m² | Premium quartz, exotic granite or sintered stone |
Reading a countertop quote line by line
Countertop quotes vary in what they bundle, which makes cheap quotes look cheaper than they are. Check that each of these is listed or confirmed as included:
- The measured area in m² or running metres, and the material, colour and thickness.
- The template visit, where the fitter measures your installed cupboards.
- Every cut-out, with the sink type (top-mount or undermount) named.
- Edge profile and any splashback strips.
- Removal and disposal of old tops.
- Delivery, travel and any access surcharge.
- Whether the price includes VAT.
Costs people forget
The tops themselves are rarely the whole bill. Disconnecting and reconnecting the sink, dishwasher and hob needs a plumber and an electrician, and fabricators usually expect you to arrange them. Tiled splashbacks often crack when old tops come out, so budget for a few replacement tiles or a new splashback. If cupboards are out of level, the fitter may need to pack or adjust them first. Finally, a new sink or tap bought at the same time adds to the total but saves a second visit.

What is the cheapest kitchen countertop in South Africa?
Postformed laminate is the cheapest. Installed rates published by South African contractors start at about R450 per m², and ready-made tops at Leroy Merlin cost between R1,355 and R3,095 each, supply only. Laminate is light and quick to fit, which also keeps labour down. The trade-off is that it can't be repaired once burnt, cut or swollen by water at the joints.
Is quartz more expensive than granite?
Usually, yes. Published 2026 prices put standard quartz at around R2,700 to R3,400 per m² installed, while common granites such as Rustenburg Black cost around R2,300 to R2,400 per m². Exotic granites can overtake standard quartz, so compare specific colours rather than materials in general. Quartz never needs sealing, which some buyers feel justifies the premium.
Do countertop prices include installation?
Most stone and quartz fabricators quote an installed price per m², covering templating, cutting and fitting. Laminate and timber are often sold supply-only, with fitting quoted separately. Plumbing and electrical reconnection are almost never included. Read each quote carefully and ask for the same scope from every supplier so you're comparing like with like.
How many square metres of countertop does an average kitchen need?
Multiply the running length of your counters by 0.6, since a standard top is 600 mm deep. A small galley with 3 m of counter needs about 1.8 m², while a family kitchen with 6 m of counter and a small island can need 4 to 5 m². Measure each run separately and add the island on its own.
Can I save by replacing the tops but keeping my cupboards?
Yes, if the carcasses are sound and level. Replacing only the countertops avoids the much larger cost of new cabinetry, and stone tops can lift the look of older cupboards. Check that the units can carry the weight of granite or quartz first. If they can't, laminate or timber is the safer upgrade.
