Blinds prices at a glance

Aluminium venetians and vertical blinds are the cheapest at roughly R400 to R750 per m² fitted, with roller blinds at about R450 to R950. Wood and faux-wood venetians run from about R900 to R1,800 per m². A three-bedroom house with 8 to 12 windows typically spends somewhere between R8,000 and R30,000, depending on the styles chosen and whether any blinds are motorised.

Blinds are made to the millimetre, so suppliers price them from the width and drop of each window. Many publish a rate per square metre; others quote per blind. Cape Town and online suppliers' 2026 prices put most indoor blinds at about R400 to R1,000 per m², and two of the suppliers we used state that their prices include VAT.

Small windows cost more per square metre than big ones, because the headrail, brackets and mechanism cost much the same whatever the size. A 1.2 m by 1.5 m window (1.8 m²) is a useful benchmark. One national online supplier prices that size at about R960 for an aluminium venetian, R1,320 for a vertical, R1,680 for a roller and R2,790 for real wood, all including VAT but supplied for you to fit yourself.

Fitted prices from local installers generally include the measure and the installation. Self-fit online orders come with free delivery but leave the measuring risk with you. If you're comparing blinds with other window coverings, see our curtain cost guide and shutter cost guide.

What moves the price

Pushes the price up

  • Real wood slats. Basswood venetians cost roughly double an aluminium venetian of the same size.
  • Motorisation. Each motor adds about R1,800 to R3,500, so a houseful of motorised blinds adds up quickly.
  • Layered fabrics. Duo (day-and-night) and zebra rollers start at well over double a plain roller from the same supplier.
  • Blockout fabrics and side channels. Full blockout costs more than sunscreen, and light-sealing side tracks add again.
  • Lots of small windows. Fixed hardware costs make small blinds expensive per m².
  • Outdoor use. Patio blinds need tougher fabric, tracks or tension systems and stronger fixings.

Brings the price down

  • Aluminium venetians and verticals. They're the cheapest blind types to buy and fit.
  • Standard colours and fabrics. Each supplier has a base range; designer prints and textures cost more.
  • Corded or chain operation. Manual control is far cheaper than motors, but use cord tensioners in children's rooms.
  • Doing several rooms at once. One measure and one fitting visit for the whole house spreads the fixed costs.
  • Fitting them yourself. Online made-to-measure blinds ship with fitting guides, saving the labour line if you're handy and measure carefully.

Blinds for a three-bedroom house: a worked example

Here's one way to price a typical house using the fitted ranges on this page. Mix and match the styles to suit your budget.

  • Three bedroom windows and a study, 1.5 m² each, in blockout roller: 6 m² × R550 to R1,000 = R3,300 to R6,000
  • Two lounge windows, 2 m² each, in faux wood: 4 m² × R900 to R1,800 = R3,600 to R7,200
  • A sliding door of about 5 m² in vertical blinds: 5 m² × R400 to R750 = R2,000 to R3,750
  • Kitchen and bathroom, 1 m² each, in aluminium venetian: 2 m² × R400 to R700 = R800 to R1,400
  • Estimated total: roughly R9,700 to R18,350

Where it could go higher

Swap the lounge to real wood and motorise the sliding door and the total moves towards R25,000 or more. One supplier's 2026 guide puts a three-bedroom home at R8,000 to R30,000, which matches this spread.

What a blinds quote should spell out

Because every blind is custom-made, it's hard to compare a total price without the detail behind it. Ask for a line per window that shows:

  • The window or room, and the finished width and drop
  • The blind type, fabric or slat range, and colour
  • Inside or outside mounting
  • Operation: chain, cord, wand, spring or motor
  • Whether measuring, fitting and removal of old blinds are included
  • Lead time and warranty period
  • Whether VAT is included

Indoor blinds versus patio blinds

Outdoor blinds are a different product with a different price. A Cape Town installer puts patio blinds at about R1,200 per m² for shade mesh with manual operation, and up to about R2,800 per m² for clear PVC with wind-rated tracks and a motor. One online supplier sells a 2 m by 2.5 m mesh patio blind for about R7,500 including VAT.

Clear PVC is the choice if you want to keep wind and rain off a braai area. Mesh cuts sun and glare while letting air through, and it costs less.

Saving money on blinds

  • Use premium finishes only where people see them most, such as the lounge, and aluminium or roller blinds elsewhere.
  • Motorise only the high or hard-to-reach windows.
  • Ask whether existing brackets can be reused when you replace a blind.
  • Get repair prices before replacing. A broken chain or cord can often be fixed for a few hundred rand.

Blinds cost questions

What are the cheapest blinds in South Africa?

Aluminium venetian and vertical blinds are usually the cheapest, at roughly R400 to R750 per m² supplied and fitted from a Cape Town supplier in 2026. Online, entry-level verticals and 25 mm aluminium venetians start from around R510 to R550 a blind for small sizes, supply only. Plain roller blinds are close behind.

How much does one roller blind cost?

A Cape Town supplier's 2026 guide puts a standard window of 1.5 to 1.8 m² at about R700 to R1,500 for a roller blind supplied and installed. A national online supplier charges about R1,680 for a 1.2 m by 1.5 m roller, including VAT and delivery, for you to fit yourself. Blockout fabric costs a little more.

Is installation included in blind prices?

Usually, when you buy from a local installer. The Cape Town supplier we used includes fitting in every range it publishes. Online self-fit suppliers don't charge for installation because you do it yourself. A Gauteng supplier quotes installation separately for some jobs, so check each quote says whether fitting is included.

Are motorised blinds worth the extra cost?

At roughly R1,800 to R3,500 extra per blind, motors make most sense on high windows, wide sliding doors and in children's rooms, where removing cords is a safety gain. For a standard bedroom window, a manual blind with a cord tensioner does the same job for much less.

Are blinds cheaper than curtains or shutters?

Usually blinds cost less than shutters. A basic roller or aluminium venetian also tends to undercut lined, made-to-measure curtains with a track. Ready-made curtains can be cheaper still. Compare the figures in our [curtain cost guide](/cost-guides/curtains) and [shutter cost guide](/cost-guides/shutters).
