How much does CCTV cost in South Africa?
A four-camera home CCTV system usually costs R5,000 to R12,000 installed, and an eight-camera system R10,000 to R20,000. IP cameras and smart features push those figures up.

A 4-camera HD system typically costs R5,000 to R12,000 installed, and an 8-camera system about R10,000 to R20,000 at the budget end. Higher-resolution IP cameras with person and vehicle detection lift a 4-camera job to roughly R12,000 to R28,000. Installation labour runs about R150 to R700 per camera point.
| What | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4-camera HD system, installed | R5,000–R12,000 per project | Analogue HD cameras, a recorder and a 2 TB drive. Fixed-price fitted kits from one installer start at about R6,400. |
| 8-camera HD system, installed | R10,000–R20,000 per project | Budget to entry mid-range. Mid-range 8-camera systems run R20,000 to R32,000, and premium ones up to R55,000. |
| 4-camera IP or premium system, installed | R12,000–R28,000 per project | Higher resolution, full-colour night images or AI detection. One fitted 4-camera IP kit is priced at about R25,200. |
| Installation labour | R150–R700 per point | Per camera. Long cable runs, double storeys and trenching sit at the top end. |
| Individual camera | R350–R2,800 per unit | From entry HD to full-colour night cameras. AI detection cameras cost R2,200 to R5,500, and PTZ cameras R3,500 or more. |
| Recorder (DVR or NVR) | R1,200–R4,500 per unit | 4-channel units at the low end, 8-channel at the high end. |
| Surveillance hard drive, 2 to 4 TB | R900–R2,800 per unit | |
| Backup power for the recorder and cameras | R800–R6,500 per project | A small UPS or DC backup at the low end. Larger battery systems cost more, and one installer prices its UPS at about R6,500. |

CCTV is usually sold as a package: a set number of cameras, a recorder, a hard drive, cabling and installation. Three South African price guides from 2026 put a 4-camera HD system at R5,000 to R12,000 installed and an 8-camera system at R10,000 to R20,000 at the budget end. One Cape Town company reports that its average completed home job comes to about R7,000.
The biggest jump in price comes from the camera technology. A fitted four-camera analogue HD kit from one installer costs about R6,400, while its four-camera IP kit, with higher resolution and smarter detection, costs about R25,200. Most installers now recommend IP for new systems, so expect that question in every quote.
If you're also budgeting for an alarm, see our alarm system cost guide. Many homes combine both, and some installers price them together.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- IP cameras and AI detection. Person and vehicle detection cameras cost R2,200 to R5,500 each, against R350 to R750 for entry HD.
- Full-colour night images. Colour night cameras cost roughly R1,400 to R2,800 each.
- Long or difficult cable runs. Double storeys, trenching to a gate and roof work push labour towards R700 per point.
- More storage. A 4 TB drive keeps more days of footage but costs up to R2,800, against R900 to R1,600 for 2 TB.
- Backup power. A small UPS adds R800 to R3,500. An inverter and battery to keep the system running for longer costs R3,500 to R9,000 or more.
- PTZ cameras. A camera that pans, tilts and zooms costs from R3,500 to over R12,000.
Brings the price down
- Fewer, better-placed cameras. Four well-chosen positions often do more than eight poorly planned ones.
- Analogue HD on existing coax. Upgrading an old analogue system can reuse cables, cutting labour.
- Fixed-price kits. Some installers sell set packages with cabling and a hard drive included, which keeps the quote predictable.
- Single-storey, short runs. A standard single-storey house can be fitted in four to six hours.
- Local storage instead of cloud. Recording to the hard drive avoids monthly cloud fees of R50 to R300.
Six cameras on a family home: a worked example
Say you want six mid-range 4 MP cameras covering the gate, driveway, front door, back door and both sides of the house, with backup power. Using component prices from a 2026 South African guide:
- Cameras: 6 × R800 to R1,600 = R4,800 to R9,600
- 8-channel NVR: R2,000 to R4,500
- 2 TB surveillance drive: R1,100 to R1,600
- Labour and cabling: 6 × R350 to R700 = R2,100 to R4,200
- Small UPS or DC backup: R1,200 to R3,500
- Estimated total: roughly R11,200 to R23,400
Leaving room to grow
Choosing an 8-channel recorder for six cameras costs a little more now but lets you add two cameras later without replacing the recorder.
What a CCTV quote should include
- Number of cameras, with make, model and resolution
- Where each camera goes and what it should show
- Recorder type and channels, and hard drive size
- How many days of footage the drive will hold
- Cabling, power supplies and any PoE switch
- Backup power, if included
- App setup for phone viewing
- Labour and travel charges
- Whether prices include VAT
Running costs after installation
A home system that records locally has few ongoing costs. Budget for a maintenance visit now and then, which 2026 guides put at about R500 to R1,500. Hard drives wear out and usually need replacing every three to five years.
Optional extras add monthly fees. Professional off-site monitoring costs roughly R150 to R600 a month, and cloud storage about R50 to R300. Repair call-outs from one Cape Town installer are charged at R450 to R900 an hour.

How much does it cost to install a single CCTV camera?
Labour for one camera point runs about R150 to R700, depending on the cable run. The camera itself costs R350 to R2,800 for most home models. If you don't already have a recorder, add R1,200 or more. Some installers charge by the hour instead, for example R950 for the first hour and R550 for each hour after.
Is IP CCTV worth the extra cost?
It depends what you need to see. IP cameras give sharper images at a distance and better person and vehicle alerts on your phone. One installer's 4-camera IP kit costs about R25,200 fitted, against about R6,400 for its analogue HD kit. If you only want to see who is at the gate, analogue HD may be enough.
Do I need backup power for CCTV?
Without it, the cameras and recorder switch off when the power goes. A small UPS or DC backup costs roughly R800 to R3,500 and covers short outages. For longer cover, an inverter and battery set-up costs R3,500 to R9,000 or more. Ask each installer how long their backup will run your system.
Why is one 8-camera quote R12,000 and another R40,000?
The cameras are usually the difference. A budget 8-camera system with entry HD cameras costs R11,000 to R20,000, while premium systems with AI detection and full-colour night images cost R32,000 to R55,000. Ask for makes, models and resolution so you can compare on the same terms.
Are these CCTV prices including VAT?
One of the guides we used states its prices include VAT, and one installer quotes its labour rates including VAT. Others don't say. Ask each company to show VAT on a separate line. Requesting quotes through Home Improvement Hub is free, and up to 3 CCTV installers can quote.
