A 1.8 m run of 358 anti-climb mesh, supplied and fitted, usually costs about R1,000 to R1,400 per metre, and a 2.4 m panel about R1,300 to R1,700 per metre. A pedestrian gate adds roughly R2,500 to R8,500, and spikes or razor wire along the top another R20 to R100 per metre. These figures are a guide from limited published data, mostly contractor price pages.
| What | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 358 mesh, 1.8 m high, supplied and installed | R1,000–R1,400/metre | Pretoria contractor pricing for 358 at 1.8 m is R1,000 to R1,200 (incl. VAT); a Johannesburg contractor quotes R1,100 to R1,400 supplied and fitted. |
| 358 mesh, 2.4 m high, supplied and installed | R1,300–R1,700/metre | Above 1.8 m the fence falls outside minor building work, so allow for plans and municipal approval on top of this. |
| Mesh panels and posts only, 1.8 m to 2.4 m (no installation) | R620–R1,150/metre | The low end is a 358 supply price including VAT; the high end is a 2.4 m anti-climb panel quoted excluding VAT. Spikes push supply prices higher. |
| Matching pedestrian gate | R2,500–R8,500 per unit | Published gate prices disagree widely. Some suppliers list a basic gate kit under R2,600; installed, lockable gates are quoted up to R8,500. |
| Vehicle gate, swing or sliding (motor extra) | R8,500–R25,000 per unit | Single published source; wide driveways and automation cost more. |
| Spikes or razor wire along the top | R20–R100/metre | Spikes run about R20 to R75 per metre; razor or barbed wire about R50 to R100. |
| Electric strands on top of the mesh | R270–R600/metre | Needs its own electrical certificate of compliance. Single published source. |
| Installation labour only, if you supply the panels | R150–R700/metre | Contractors quote anywhere from R150 to R700 per metre depending on height, ground and location. |

Mesh fencing is sold by the running metre, but the metre rate hides a lot. A panel height, a mesh aperture, a wire gauge, a coating and a post system all sit inside that one number. Two contractors can both write "ClearVu, R1,200/m" and be quoting quite different fences.
The figures below come from South African contractor and supplier price pages published in 2024 to 2026. Most are Gauteng businesses, and several don't say whether VAT is included, so treat them as a starting point. These figures are a guide from limited published data. We could not find a reliable published rate for 3 m panels; contractors quote them per site.
Use the ranges to sanity-check quotes, then ask for the specification behind every line so you compare like with like.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- Taller panels. One Pretoria contractor estimates 2.4 m runs at about 20 to 30% more than 1.8 m, and anything over 1.8 m needs plans and approval.
- Tighter aperture and thicker wire. True 358 mesh (about 76 mm by 12.7 mm) costs more than economy 100 mm by 50 mm mesh, which is easier to climb.
- Powder coat or PVC over the galvanising. Sources put the premium at roughly 10 to 30% over plain galvanised panels.
- Rock, slopes and tight access. Hand-dug footings in rock and stepped panels on a slope add labour; one contractor lists difficult-ground surcharges per post.
- Gates, toppings and automation. A vehicle gate and motor can cost as much as 15 to 20 metres of fence.
- Removing an old fence first. Taking out palisade or a damaged wall is quoted separately.
Brings the price down
- Long, straight runs. Bulk orders of 100 m or more often attract a 5 to 10% discount, according to one contractor.
- Staying at 1.8 m. It avoids the cost and delay of full building plans, though you still need to notify your municipality.
- Galvanised finish only. Inland, away from salt air, plain hot-dip galvanising may be enough and saves the coating premium.
- Flat, open ground. Easy truck access to the boundary and soft soil keep footing costs down.
- Generic 358 mesh rather than a named system. Ask for both prices; the specification matters more than the name.
Pricing a 30 m street frontage, step by step
Say you're replacing an old precast wall along a 30 m street boundary with 358 mesh, plus one pedestrian gate and spikes along the top. Using the ranges above:
- Fence at 1.8 m: 30 m × R1,000 to R1,400 = R30,000 to R42,000.
- Pedestrian gate: R2,500 to R8,500.
- Spikes: 30 m × R20 to R75 = R600 to R2,250.
- Total at 1.8 m: about R33,100 to R52,750, before removing the old wall.
- Same job at 2.4 m: 30 m × R1,300 to R1,700 = R39,000 to R51,000 for the fence alone, so about R42,100 to R61,750 with the gate and spikes, plus plan and approval costs.
Height, aperture and wire: reading the specification
Mesh panels are commonly made at 1.2 m, 1.8 m, 2.1 m, 2.4 m and 3 m. Each step up adds steel per metre and usually a longer, heavier post, so the jump in price is not linear. Three-metre panels are mostly used on commercial and estate perimeters and are priced per project.
358 refers to an aperture of 3 inches by 0.5 inch (about 76.2 mm by 12.7 mm) with 8-gauge wire, around 4 mm. Economy "clearview" panels with a 100 mm by 50 mm or 75 mm by 25 mm opening look similar from the street but give a foothold. That's why the cheapest per-metre quote is often not 358 at all.
Posts, footings and fixings
Posts carry the fence, and most hidden cost sits in the ground. One Gauteng contractor describes footing holes of about 300 mm diameter, 600 mm to 800 mm deep, filled with concrete that needs 24 to 48 hours to cure before panels are hung. Rock that needs breaking or a slope that needs stepped panels adds time.
Check whether the quote includes the post caps, clamp bars and tamper-resistant bolts, or only the panels and posts.
Galvanised, powder-coated or PVC-coated
Plain galvanised panels are the base price. A powder coat, usually black or green, or a PVC coating adds roughly 10 to 30% depending on the supplier. Near the coast, that extra layer over galvanising is usually worth the money, because rust at the welds is what ends a mesh fence's life early. Ask whether the panels were galvanised before or after welding, and what the coating guarantee covers.
Lines to look for on a mesh fencing quote
- Metres of fence, panel height and aperture (358 or otherwise), with wire thickness.
- Post type and spacing, footing depth and concrete.
- Finish: galvanised only, powder-coated or PVC, and the colour.
- Each gate separately, with lock, hinges or track, and any motor.
- Toppings: spikes, razor wire or electric strands, priced per metre.
- Removal of the old boundary, rubble disposal and any surcharge for rock.
- Whether VAT is included.

Why do ClearVu quotes vary so much per metre?
Because the metre rate bundles height, aperture, wire gauge, coating and footings together. An economy 100 mm by 50 mm panel at 1.8 m and a powder-coated 358 panel at 2.4 m can differ by several hundred rand a metre. Ask each contractor for the panel specification and you'll usually find the gap explained.
How much does a 3 m ClearVu fence cost?
We couldn't find a reliable published per-metre rate for 3 m panels in South Africa. Contractors list the height but quote it per site. Expect it to cost more than the R1,300 to R1,700 a metre published for 2.4 m, and remember that a fence above 1.8 m needs plans approved by your municipality.
Is it cheaper to buy panels and hire my own installer?
Sometimes. Supply-only mesh runs about R620 to R1,150 a metre for 1.8 m to 2.4 m panels, and labour-only rates range from R150 to R700 a metre. Added together, that can land close to a supplied-and-fitted price, and you lose a single point of responsibility if posts move or panels don't line up.
How much do gates add to a mesh fence?
A matching pedestrian gate is roughly R2,500 to R8,500, depending on whether you're buying a basic kit or a fitted, lockable gate. A vehicle gate is quoted at about R8,500 to R25,000 before a motor. On a short frontage, gates can be a third of the total cost.
Does a powder coat cost much more than galvanised?
Published sources put the premium at roughly 10 to 30% over plain galvanised panels. On a R40,000 fence, that's around R4,000 to R12,000. It's worth it near the sea or where you want a black or green finish that blends in.
