Garage door prices depend mainly on three things: the type of door, whether it's for a single or double garage, and whether a motor is part of the price. Online prices often mix these up. A roll-up door advertised from under R4,000 is usually the bare door, while a figure of R20,000 might include a sectional door, motor, installation and removal of the old one.

Published 2026 guides from South African garage door companies put a single door at around R12,000 to R25,000 and a double at R18,000 to R40,000, with motors and installation either included or listed separately. Steel is the cheapest material, then composite, aluminium and timber.

One 2025 guide states its prices include VAT, and the others don't say either way. Ask every company to confirm whether VAT is included and whether the motor, remotes and battery backup are part of the price.

What moves the price

Pushes the price up

  • Double width. A double door costs roughly half as much again as a single, sometimes more.
  • Timber and aluminium. Meranti doors start around R14,500 for a single, and custom timber designs can pass R45,000.
  • Insulation. Insulated panels add about 15 to 25% to the door price.
  • Non-standard openings. Custom sizing adds roughly 20 to 30%.
  • Coastal specification. Corrosion-resistant aluminium and hardware cost 10 to 15% more in Cape Town and Durban.
  • No plug point in the garage. A new socket for the motor costs about R1,200 to R2,500.

Brings the price down

  • A roll-up door. It's the cheapest type to buy and suits garages with little headroom.
  • Standard sizes. Doors made for common openings are cheaper and quicker to supply.
  • Keeping a working motor. If your current motor suits the new door, you only pay to refit it.
  • Plain steel. A steel sectional door in a standard colour gives the best value per year of use.
  • Regular servicing. A R650 to R950 service catches worn springs and cables before they fail at a worse moment.

Replacing a double garage door: a worked example

Say you're replacing an old manual tip-up door on a double garage with an automated steel sectional door, and there's no plug point near the motor position. Using the ranges and figures on this page:

  • Double sectional door, automated and installed: R18,000 to R40,000
  • Removing and disposing of the old double door: R1,500 to R3,000
  • A new plug point for the motor: R1,200 to R2,500
  • Battery backup for the motor: R500 to R2,000
  • Estimated total: roughly R21,200 to R47,500

Where it lands in practice

A plain steel door with a standard motor in Gauteng will usually sit near the bottom half of that range. An insulated or aluminium door, a premium motor or a coastal specification pushes it towards the top.

Repair costs at a glance

Most call-outs are for repairs rather than new doors. One garage door company's September 2026 price list gives these typical figures:

  • Call-out and inspection: R450 to R750
  • Roller replacement: R700 to R1,500
  • Track repairs or putting a door back on its track: R1,000 to R2,800
  • Motor repairs: R850 to R2,800
  • Safety beam repairs: R600 to R1,600
  • Programming remotes: R250 to R650

What a garage door quote should include

  • Door type, material, colour, panel design and whether it's insulated
  • Exact opening size and whether it's a standard or custom door
  • Motor make and model, number of remotes and battery backup
  • Installation, removal of the old door and disposal
  • Any electrical work needed for the motor
  • Guarantee periods for the door, the motor and the workmanship
  • Whether the price includes VAT

Repair or replace: the cost logic

If the panels are sound, even a run of repairs is cheaper than a new door. A spring, cables and a service together usually cost under R5,000. A new single sectional door starts around R12,000. Replacement starts to make sense when panels are rusted through or badly dented, or when repair bills keep arriving every few months.

Do prices differ by region?

A 2025 national guide says Gauteng prices average slightly lower, and that coastal areas such as Cape Town, Durban and Umhlanga carry 10 to 15% premiums for aluminium and corrosion-resistant specifications. It also notes that some security estates add access surcharges.

A May 2026 price guide, on the other hand, quotes the same R12,000 to R40,000 range for Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria, so the difference may show up more in the specification than in the base price.

Garage Doors cost questions

What is the cheapest type of garage door?

A steel roll-up door is the cheapest. Bare single roll-up doors are listed from under R4,000, and fitted prices start around R5,000. Adding a motor and installation brings an automated single roll-up to about R10,000 to R18,000. They suit low-headroom garages but are noisier and less insulated than sectional doors.

How much does it cost to automate an existing garage door?

Motors cost about R2,200 to R5,500 depending on the brand and the door type, and installation adds roughly R800 to R3,000. Budget around R3,000 to R8,000 in total. Add R500 to R2,000 for a battery backup, and more if the garage needs a new plug point.

How much does a garage door spring replacement cost?

A 2026 price list from a South African garage door company puts spring replacement at R1,400 to R3,200, depending on the spring type and the door. Expect a call-out fee of R450 to R750 if it isn't included. Because springs are under high tension, this is always a job for a technician.

Is a wooden garage door worth the extra cost?

Timber doors cost from about R14,500 for a single meranti door and can pass R45,000 for custom designs. They look good but need sealing every two to three years. If you want the look without the upkeep, composite woodgrain doors cost roughly R12,000 to R28,000.

How often should a garage door be serviced, and what does it cost?

Follow the interval your installer recommends for your door and motor. A routine service costs around R650 to R950. It's worth paying for, because a technician can spot a worn spring or frayed cable before it snaps and leaves the car stuck inside.
