How much does tar or asphalt surfacing cost in South Africa?
A hot-mix asphalt layer on a sound base is commonly quoted at about R200 to R480 per square metre, while a chip-and-spray seal can cost under R150. Published figures vary a lot, so read the ranges below with that in mind.

Published 2026 rates put a 30 to 40 mm hot-mix asphalt surface at roughly R150 to R500 per m², and a full new tarred driveway including base layer works at about R300 to R580 per m². Chip-and-spray seals are the budget route at around R50 to R145 per m². These figures are a guide from limited published data, and sources disagree widely.
| What | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-mix asphalt, 30–40 mm, on an existing sound base | R150–R500/m² | Lower figures come from general national ranges, higher ones from Johannesburg installations and premium specs. 40 mm is the usual driveway thickness. |
| New tarred driveway including base preparation | R300–R580/m² | Includes excavation, a compacted granular base and the asphalt layer. Poor ground can push this higher. |
| Chip-and-spray seal (single or double) | R50–R145/m² | A sprayed binder with stone chips rolled in. A double seal is at the top of the range and wears better. |
| Cold-mix premix asphalt | R60–R180/m² | Mostly used for patching and light-use areas rather than full driveways. |
| Resurfacing an existing tarred driveway | R150–R300/m² | From a single published source. It assumes the old surface and base can take an overlay. |
| Slurry seal over worn tar | R30–R60/m² | |
| Small emergency patch repairs | R700–R1,600/m² | Small areas carry a call-out and setup cost, so the per-m² rate is high. |
| Rubble removal | R500–R2,400 per load | From a 1–2 m³ mini load up to a 4–6 m³ medium load. |

Tar surfacing quotes depend more on the specification than almost any other outdoor job. A thin sprayed seal, a cold premix and a 40 mm hot-mix asphalt layer can all be called a tar driveway, yet their rates differ several times over. Before you compare prices, check which product each contractor is offering and how thick it will be.
Published South African rates are scattered. One 2026 surfacing price guide gives about R270 per m² for 40 mm hot-mix asphalt and R270 to R480 per m² for the layer alone on a residential site. Kandua's cost guide puts hot-mix asphalt at only R70 to R150 per m² and an all-round average near R120. A Gauteng contractor quotes R300 to R500 per m² for Johannesburg asphalt. Some of the lower figures look like material or thin-layer rates, so we've used wide ranges and flagged this guide for review.
Asphalt is also tied to the oil price. Bitumen, the binder that holds the stone together, is listed by Kandua at about R28,000 per tonne. When fuel prices move, surfacing quotes tend to follow, so a quote older than a month or two may not hold.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- Layer works. If there's no proper granular base, the contractor must excavate, import and compact one before any asphalt goes down.
- Thickness. Each extra 10 mm of hot-mix means more tonnes delivered hot from the plant.
- Small areas. Under about 30 m², mobilisation of the paver, roller and crew is spread over very few square metres.
- Distance from the asphalt plant. Hot-mix has to arrive and be laid while it's still hot, which limits how far it can travel.
- Access. A narrow gate or steep slope may mean hand-laying instead of machine-laying.
- Coloured or decorative finishes. One guide lists a premium coloured surface at around R640 per m².
Brings the price down
- A sound existing base. Overlaying a stable surface skips the costly earthworks.
- Choosing a chip-and-spray seal. It's a fraction of the price of hot-mix, although it suits lighter use.
- Larger areas. Fixed setup costs shrink per m² on long driveways, farm roads and complex parking.
- Sharing a mobilisation. Neighbours or a body corporate surfacing at the same time can split the crew and machine costs.
- Timely resealing. Sealing cracks and worn areas early is much cheaper than rebuilding a failed base later.
Three ways to surface 120 m²: comparing the options
Say you have a 30 m long, 4 m wide gravel driveway with a firm, well-compacted base, or an old tarred surface that's still structurally sound. Here's how three common specifications compare using the rates above:
| Specification | Estimated cost for 120 m² |
|---|---|
| Double chip-and-spray seal (R95–R145 per m²) | R11,400 – R17,400 |
| 40 mm hot-mix asphalt on the existing base (R270–R480 per m²) | R32,400 – R57,600 |
| New base plus asphalt (R300–R580 per m²) | R36,000 – R69,600 |
Reading the comparison
The seal is the cheapest by far, but it's a thin wearing coat and needs resealing sooner. Hot-mix gives a smoother, more durable finish that suits daily car traffic. The third row is what you'd pay if the existing base can't be trusted, which a contractor should check before quoting.
Line items to look for on a surfacing quote
- Product and layer thickness in millimetres, for example 40 mm continuously graded hot-mix
- Base work: excavation depth, imported material and compaction method
- Prime coat or tack coat before the asphalt
- Edge treatment, such as kerbs or a haunched edge
- Falls and drainage so water runs off rather than ponding
- Mobilisation or minimum-charge fee
- Removal of rubble and the old surface
- Whether VAT is included
Costs that catch people out
Mobilisation charges. One 2026 guide notes that jobs under about 30 m² usually attract a minimum charge, because the plant and crew cost the same to bring to site whatever the area. A small pothole repair can therefore cost several times the per-m² rate of a full driveway.
Rubble. Breaking up an old surface fills skips quickly. Removal is commonly charged by the load, from around R500 for a small load to over R2,000 for heavier material.
After-hours work. Kandua lists after-hours labour at 20 to 50% above standard rates. Ask for this up front if the work must happen when a business is closed.
Do prices differ by region?
The published Gauteng rates show some spread within the province. One Gauteng contractor puts Pretoria about 5 to 10% below Johannesburg, and Kandua's Pretoria figures range from about R85 to R150 per m² depending on the suburb. We didn't find comparable published rates for other provinces.

Is tar cheaper than paving for a driveway?
Usually, yes, for the same area. Paving guides typically quote R300 to R600 per m² for concrete pavers, while asphalt on a sound base is often quoted from about R200 per m². Chip-and-spray seals are cheaper still. The gap narrows if the asphalt job needs a new base. Our [paving cost guide](/cost-guides/paving) has the comparison figures.
Why do tar surfacing prices online vary so much?
Different sites quote different products. Some figures cover only the material or a thin seal, others a full 40 mm hot-mix layer, and some include base works. A few also reflect a single city. Compare quotes on the same specification and thickness, and ask whether VAT and mobilisation are included.
What does it cost to fix a few potholes in my driveway?
Small repairs are expensive per square metre because the contractor still has to bring material, tools and a crew. Kandua lists small emergency patches at about R700 to R1,600 per m², plus a call-out fee of roughly R250 to R700. If several areas are failing, resurfacing the whole driveway may be better value.
Is there a minimum job size for asphalt?
Many contractors charge a minimum or mobilisation fee for small jobs. One 2026 surfacing guide says this usually applies below about 30 m². The fee covers transporting hot-mix, a roller and the crew. Ask for it as a separate line so you can see how much of a small quote is setup.
Will my quote still be valid in three months?
Maybe not. Asphalt depends on bitumen, which follows oil prices, so contractors often keep quotes valid for a short time only. Check the validity period on the quote. If you're not ready to book, ask whether the price can be held, or whether only the material portion will change.
