How much does paving cost in South Africa?
Most homeowners pay somewhere between R300 and R700 per square metre for a paved driveway or patio, supplied and laid. Stone and designer finishes push that towards R1,000.

Standard concrete or interlocking pavers usually come in at about R300 to R600 per m² laid, with clay brick at roughly R400 to R700 and natural stone or cobble at up to R1,000. A typical 40 m² driveway lands somewhere between R17,000 and R38,000 once breaking out the old surface, edging and delivery are added.
| What | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete or interlocking pavers, supplied and laid | R300–R600/m² | The most common driveway choice. Thin-base budget jobs are quoted lower, but that saving usually shows up later as sinking. |
| Clay brick pavers, supplied and laid | R400–R700/m² | Colour runs right through a clay brick, so it fades less than a pigmented concrete unit. |
| Natural stone, cobble or premium designer finishes | R450–R1,000/m² | Granite, Belgian block, imported or hand-laid patterns. Sealing is often included at the top end. |
| Lift and relay of sunken or uneven pavers | R100–R500/m² | The low end assumes the base is sound and the existing pavers are reused. Rebuilding the base costs more. |
| Labour only (you supply the pavers) | R100–R150/m² | For standard stretcher or herringbone laying. Intricate patterns and stone run to R250 to R300 or more. |
| Breaking out and carting away an old surface | R50–R100/m² | |
| Kerbing, edging or soldier courses | R100–R200/metre | |
| Re-sanding or re-jointing existing paving | R85–R200/m² |

Paving is priced by the square metre, but the rate you're quoted bundles several jobs together: excavation, a compacted sub-base, bedding sand, the pavers, edge restraints and jointing sand. Published 2025 and 2026 price guides from South African paving contractors put the installed figure for ordinary concrete pavers at roughly R300 to R600 per m². Most residential projects end up in the R450 to R700 band once proper base depth and neat edging are included.
The pavers themselves are only part of the bill. One Cape Town guide estimates materials at 45 to 65% of the total, with labour making up the rest. That's why two quotes for the same paver can differ by R200 per m²: one includes a deeper, better-compacted base and the other doesn't.
The figures below come from contractor price guides and an online cost aggregator. None of them states clearly whether VAT is included, and they don't all agree on whether labour is in the number. So treat each range as a planning figure, not a quote, and ask every company to say in writing whether its price includes VAT.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- Poor ground or a slope. Clay soils and sloping sites need more excavation, more base material and sometimes a retaining edge.
- Removing what's there. Breaking out old concrete or paving adds roughly R50 to R100 per m², plus the rubble loads.
- Thicker or coloured units. 80 mm driveway pavers cost more than 60 mm patio pavers, and coloured units add a little per m².
- Complex laying patterns. Herringbone at 45 degrees, circles and mixed-material borders mean more cutting and slower progress.
- Drainage work. Channel drains, falls towards the street and permeable systems add 10 to 25% to a basic quote.
- Long delivery distances. Haulage of pavers, sand and G5 base material can run from about R1,200 to over R5,000 depending on distance.
Brings the price down
- A larger area. Setting-out and delivery are fixed costs, so the per-m² rate drops as the job grows.
- Standard grey interlocking pavers. They're the cheapest unit to buy and the quickest to lay.
- A sound existing base. If an old surface can be lifted and the base reused, you skip much of the earthworks.
- Simple shapes. Straight edges and a plain stretcher-bond pattern keep cutting and waste low.
- Booking outside the rush. Spring and the pre-December period are busy, so ask whether a winter start is cheaper.
A 40 m² driveway: a worked example
Take a single-car driveway of 10 m by 4 m, currently cracked concrete, being replaced with standard concrete interlocking pavers. Using the ranges on this page:
- Pavers supplied and laid: 40 m² × R300 to R600 = R12,000 to R24,000
- Breaking out the old slab: 40 m² × R50 to R100 = R2,000 to R4,000
- Edging along both long sides: 20 m × R100 to R200 = R2,000 to R4,000
- Delivery and haulage: about R1,200 to R5,700, depending on how far the yard is
- Estimated total: roughly R17,200 to R37,700
Why the spread is so wide
The low total assumes flat, firm ground, a short delivery and the cheapest grey pavers. The high total allows for a deeper base, 80 mm units and a longer haul. Clay pavers would add roughly R4,000 to the low end. Natural stone could double the paver line.
What a proper paving quote should itemise
A one-line price per m² hides the parts that matter most. Ask each company to break the number down so you can compare like with like:
- The measured area, and whether waste and cuts are allowed for
- Excavation depth and how the spoil will be removed
- Sub-base material, layer thickness and how it will be compacted
- The paver: make, thickness, colour and pattern
- Edge restraints, kerbs or haunching, priced per metre
- Drainage: falls, channels or outlets
- Delivery, rubble removal and whether VAT is included
Repair or replace?
If only a few patches have dropped and the pavers are intact, a lift-and-relay at roughly R100 to R200 per m² is far cheaper than starting over. Rebuilding the base under the dip lifts that figure towards R500 per m².
Once more than about a third of the area has sunk or rutted, or the pavers are cracked and faded, replacement often works out better value. You pay once for a new base rather than repeatedly for patching.
Saving money without a weaker driveway
- Spend on the base and save on the paver. A grey interlocking unit on a solid base outlasts a designer paver on a thin one.
- Keep the decorative border to a single soldier course rather than a full feature band.
- Ask whether pavers in good condition from the old surface can be cleaned and reused on a path or yard area.
- Get all three quotes on the same specification so a low price isn't just a thinner base.
Do prices differ by region?
Location does move the price. A Cape Town contractor's 2026 guide puts Johannesburg rates about 5 to 15% above the national range. A KwaZulu-Natal company quotes Durban rates for concrete pavers at about R240 to R390 per m², noticeably below its national figure.
Hilly suburbs such as Kloof and Hillcrest need more excavation, and coastal sites need extra attention to drainage, so a lower regional base rate can be cancelled out by the site itself.

What is the cheapest way to pave a driveway?
Standard grey concrete interlocking pavers laid in a simple pattern are usually the cheapest option, from about R300 per m² installed. Reusing a sound existing base and keeping the shape rectangular also help. Avoid saving on base depth or compaction, because a sunken driveway costs more to fix than the difference you saved.
Is paving cheaper than a concrete or tar driveway?
One 2025–2026 guide puts tar and asphalt at around R200 to R450 per m², below most paving. Plain concrete driveways run about R500 to R850 per m². Paving sits between them, but individual pavers can be lifted and relaid, which makes repairs cheaper. See our [tar surfacing cost guide](/cost-guides/asphalt-and-tar-surfacing) for the asphalt side.
How much does labour cost if I buy the pavers myself?
A KwaZulu-Natal paving company quotes labour at about R100 to R150 per m² for standard laying and R250 to R300 or more for complex patterns or stone. You'd still pay for the sub-base, sand and edging, and buying pavers yourself puts the risk of wrong quantities and breakages on you.
Why do some paving quotes come in at under R250 per m²?
Prices that low usually mean a thin base, little excavation and the cheapest units. That can be fine for a garden path that only takes foot traffic. On a driveway, cars tend to press ruts into a weak base within a few seasons. Ask the installer how deep they'll dig and what base material they'll use.
Does the price include VAT?
The published price guides we used don't say whether their figures include VAT, so assume they may not. A VAT-registered company has to add 15%. Ask each quote to show VAT on a separate line so you can compare totals properly.
