How much does a swimming pool cost in South Africa?
A standard family pool, fully installed, usually costs somewhere between R80,000 and R350,000. Resurfacing an existing pool is a much smaller job, typically R15,000 to R50,000.

Published 2026 guides put a standard fibreglass pool at roughly R80,000 to R350,000 installed and a concrete (gunite) pool at about R150,000 to R350,000, with custom designs well beyond that. Resurfacing an average home pool costs about R15,000 to R50,000, and a salt chlorinator adds R4,000 to R22,000.
| What | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fibreglass pool, standard family size, installed | R80,000–R350,000 per project | The low end is a medium shell with basic coping. The top end includes paving surrounds and finishing, and sites in the Western Cape. |
| Gunite (concrete) pool, standard family size, installed | R150,000–R350,000 per project | Budget quotes for small pools start nearer R80,000. Premium and custom designs run R350,000 to R800,000 or more. |
| Resurfacing with marbelite or fibreglass | R15,000–R50,000 per project | For pools of about 15 to 50 m² of surface. Fibreglass relining costs roughly 20 to 40% more than white marbelite. |
| Salt chlorinator, supplied and installed | R4,000–R22,000 per unit | Entry-level units at the bottom, larger or self-cleaning units at the top. |
| Coping replacement | R350–R1,200/metre | Concrete coping at about R350 to R450 per metre. Natural or imported stone at R800 to R1,200. |
| Pool pump replacement | R2,500–R7,500 per unit | From a single 2026 price guide. Variable-speed pumps sit at or above the top of this range. |
| Leak detection and repair | R2,800–R8,500 per project | From a single 2026 price guide. Major structural repairs are priced separately. |
| Pool maintenance service | R450–R1,200 per month | Two to four visits a month. Chemicals may or may not be included. |

Pool prices in South Africa vary more than most home projects, and the published guides don't agree closely. One 2026 guide puts a medium fibreglass pool at R80,000 to R140,000 installed. A Western Cape builder puts its total, including excavation, plumbing, coping and paving, at R180,000 to R350,000. The difference is mostly about what's counted. Some figures stop at the shell, pump and coping. Others include paving, landscaping and plans.
That's why the headline ranges on this page are wide. A fibreglass pool usually costs less than a gunite pool of the same size, because the shell is made in a factory and the build takes days rather than weeks. A gunite pool costs more but can be any shape, and its marbelite finish eventually needs redoing.
None of the sources we used states whether VAT is included. Treat the ranges as a planning guide, and ask every builder for a quote that lists what's in and what's out, with VAT shown separately.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- Size and depth. More volume means more digging, more steel or a bigger shell, and larger equipment.
- Difficult ground. Rock, clay and dolomite areas push up excavation and foundation costs. One guide adds 15 to 25% on dolomite-risk sites.
- Poor access. A fibreglass shell needs a crane route. Hand-digging or removing a wall to get machines in adds cost.
- Premium finishes. Pebble, glass bead or stone finishes and stone coping cost far more than white marbelite and concrete coping.
- Extras. Heat pumps, LED lighting, automation and water features can each add tens of thousands of rand.
- Plans and approvals. Engineering, drawings and municipal submissions are sometimes quoted separately.
Brings the price down
- Choosing a stock fibreglass shell. Standard moulds are the cheapest way to get a new pool.
- A simple rectangle. Straight sides mean less steel, less finishing and simpler coping.
- Resurfacing rather than rebuilding. If the shell is sound, a new finish costs a fraction of a new pool.
- Concrete coping and white marbelite. The plainest finishes are also the cheapest.
- Easy access. A clear route for an excavator or crane saves hours of labour.
Renovating an 8 × 4 m pool: a worked example
Take an existing 8 × 4 m gunite pool with rough, stained marbelite, loose coping all the way round, a pump near the end of its life and a slow leak. Using the ranges on this page:
- Leak detection and repair: R2,800 to R8,500
- Resurfacing in white marbelite: R21,500 to R50,000 (one Gauteng guide prices a 32 m² pool at R21,500; other guides run higher where more preparation is needed)
- New coping around a 24 m perimeter: 24 m × R350 to R850 = R8,400 to R20,400
- Replacement pump: R2,500 to R7,500
- Estimated total: roughly R35,200 to R86,400
Why fix the leak first
Resurfacing over an unrepaired leak wastes the money spent on the finish. Leak detection is a small part of the total, so it's worth doing before anything else.
What a pool quote should list
Two pool quotes can differ by R100,000 simply because one includes the paving and the other doesn't. Ask each builder to list:
- Pool dimensions, depth and shape, and for fibreglass the shell model
- Excavation, rubble removal and what happens if they hit rock
- Plumbing, electrical connection and the equipment by make and model
- Coping type and length, and any paving around the pool
- Plans, engineering and municipal approval, if included
- The first fill of water, chemicals and commissioning
- Payment stages and whether VAT is included
Running costs after the build
A pool keeps costing money after it's built. A monthly service runs about R450 to R1,200, and one Western Cape builder estimates annual maintenance at R6,000 to R8,500 for a fibreglass pool and R8,000 to R12,000 for a gunite pool.
Electricity for the pump is the other ongoing cost. Spending more on an efficient pump up front often pays back through lower monthly bills, so ask for the expected running cost alongside the purchase price.
Saving money on a new pool
- Settle on the size you'll actually use. A smaller pool costs less to build, heat, clean and run.
- Get quotes on the same scope, so one builder's paving allowance doesn't make the other look expensive.
- Leave decorative paving and planting until after the pool is built, if your budget is tight.
- Include a safety net or cover in the original quote rather than adding it later as a separate job.
Do prices differ by region?
One 2026 national price index shows small differences between cities for standard family pools, with Cape Town at the top and Pretoria at the bottom. It adds 5 to 10% for coastal sites, where marine-grade hardware is needed, and 15 to 25% in dolomite-risk areas such as Centurion and the West Rand, where foundations need engineering.

Is a fibreglass pool cheaper than a gunite pool?
Usually, for the same size. 2026 guides put standard fibreglass pools at roughly R80,000 to R220,000 and standard gunite pools at about R150,000 to R350,000. Fibreglass also avoids periodic marbelite resurfacing. Gunite costs more but allows any shape or depth, which matters on awkward plots or where you want a specific design.
How much does it cost to resurface a pool?
A Gauteng pool company prices white marbelite resurfacing from about R14,000 for a 5 × 3 m pool to R30,000 for a 10 × 5 m pool. Fibreglass relining costs more, around R18,000 to R42,000 for the same sizes. Other guides go up to R50,000. Structural repairs, new tiles and coping are usually extra.
What does a pool pump cost to replace?
One 2026 price guide puts pump replacement at roughly R2,500 to R7,500, with repairs from about R850 to R2,800. Variable-speed pumps cost more to buy but use less electricity. Ask for the make and model so you can compare quotes and running costs properly.
Are plans and approval included in a pool quote?
Not always. One Western Cape builder lists municipal permits and compliance at R15,000 to R25,000, and engineering and design for gunite pools at R15,000 to R35,000. Ask each builder whether drawings, engineering and submission are included, and who is responsible if approval is delayed.
Do pool prices include VAT?
The price guides we used don't say, so don't assume they do. A VAT-registered pool builder must add 15%, which on a R200,000 pool is R30,000. Ask for VAT on a separate line before you compare totals.
