How much does electric fencing cost in South Africa?
Electric fence pricing is driven by strand count, how many metres of wall you're covering and which energiser goes in the box. Here's what installers were charging in 2025 and 2026.

Installers price wall-top electric fencing by the metre according to how many strands it carries: roughly R85 to R200 per metre for 6 to 8 strands, and more for 10 or 12. Free-standing fences of 18 to 30 strands cost about R150 to R400 per metre. Budget a further R2,500 to R7,800 for the energiser and a few hundred rand for its backup battery, which many rates leave out.
| What | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-top fence, 6 to 8 strands | R85–R200/metre | Price lists we checked put a 6-strand wall-top at R85 to R180 and 8-strand at R115 to R200. Longer runs drop by about R5 to R20 a metre. |
| Wall-top fence, 10 to 12 strands | R130–R300/metre | Most price lists sit at R130 to R200; one guide quotes R250 to R300 or more for complex 12-plus strand systems. |
| Free-standing fence, 18 to 30 strands | R150–R400/metre | Height rises with strands: 18 strands is about 1.8 m and 30 strands about 3 m. Commercial 30-strand work with monitoring can cost far more. |
| Energiser | R2,500–R7,800 per unit | Domestic units start around R3,000; commercial-grade energisers reach R7,800. Often priced separately from the per-metre rate. |
| Backup battery (12 V) | R450–R1,000 per unit | A standard 7 Ah battery costs R450 to R600 and a 12 Ah one R700 to R1,000. Larger backup set-ups can cost up to about R3,000. |
| Electric fence system certificate of compliance | R500–R1,600 per certificate | Some installers build it into new-fence rates; on an existing fence expect a separate inspection fee too, plus any repairs needed to pass. |
| Lightning diverter | R350–R600 per unit | |
| Repair call-out | R500–R950 per visit | Before parts and labour. Emergency and after-hours call-outs cost more. |

An electric fence quote has two halves. The first is the run: brackets, insulators, live and earth wires, priced per metre according to how many strands sit on the wall. The second is the box: the energiser, its battery and the accessories that protect and monitor it. Installers split these differently. One will quote a low rate per metre with the energiser extra; another quotes a higher rate with the energiser, battery and certificate folded in. Neither is cheaper until you add up the whole job.
Strand count matters more than anything on the per-metre side. A 6-strand wall-top is about 600 mm tall, a 12-strand about 1.2 m, and each step up adds wire, insulators and taller brackets. Free-standing fences start where wall-tops stop, at around 18 strands and 1.8 m, because they're the whole barrier rather than a topping.
The figures below come from South African installer price lists and cost guides published in 2025 and 2026. Few of them say whether VAT is included; one that does (Alectra, January 2026) quotes VAT-inclusive prices. Treat every range as a guide, then confirm against real quotes.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- More strands. Going from 6 to 12 strands on a wall roughly adds R40 to R100 a metre on the price lists we checked.
- Free-standing construction. Posts set in concrete add cost: one installer lists R500 to R1,500 for post concrete alone.
- A bigger energiser. Long perimeters and heavy vegetation need more output, pushing you from a R3,000 domestic unit towards R5,500 to R7,800.
- Short runs. Per-metre rates fall on longer fences, so a small townhouse wall pays the top rate on every metre.
- Extras on the box. Lightning diverters, gate contact sets (R150 to R300), larger batteries and alarm links all add up.
- Distance and access. Travel fees, difficult terrain and clearing plants off the line are often charged on top.
Brings the price down
- Fewer strands where the wall is already high. A tall wall may need only a 6 or 8-strand topping rather than 12.
- Longer continuous runs. Price lists drop by R5 to R20 a metre once a job passes 100 m or 200 m.
- Sizing the energiser to the fence. A domestic perimeter rarely needs a commercial unit.
- Reusing sound brackets. On an upgrade, ask whether existing brackets and insulators can stay.
- Neighbours sharing a wall. Splitting a shared boundary run can cut each household's bill.
Topping a 40 m back wall: a worked example
Say you want an 8-strand wall-top fence along a 40 m back and side wall, with a mid-range energiser and a standard battery. Using the ranges above:
- Wire run: 40 m × R125 to R200 = R5,000 to R8,000
- Energiser: R3,000 to R5,500 for a domestic or residential unit
- Battery: R450 to R600 for a 7 Ah unit
- Lightning diverter: R350 to R600
- Total: about R8,800 to R14,700
If the certificate isn't in the rate
Add R500 to R1,600 for the compliance certificate, taking the top end to about R16,300. Kandua's 2025 example of a 50 m, 8-strand wall-top comes out at R11,010 to R18,010, which lines up once you allow for the extra 10 metres.
Reading the line items on an electric fence quote
Ask each installer to break the price into the run and the box. Without that split, a low per-metre rate can hide an expensive energiser, or a high one can include things the cheaper quote leaves out.
- Strands and height of the fence, and the metres covered.
- Energiser make, model and joule rating, so you can compare like with like.
- Battery size in amp-hours, and whether a spare or bigger battery is offered.
- Earthing: how many earth spikes and where. One price guide we checked lists the earth system as part of the per-metre rate; confirm it on your quote.
- Lightning diverters, gate contacts, siren and warning signs, each priced or marked as included.
- The compliance certificate, stated as included or with its own fee.
Costs that surface after the fence is up
Batteries are the most common running cost. A 7 Ah battery costs R450 to R600 and will need replacing during the fence's life. Lightning damage is the other big one: a strike can kill an energiser, which is why a R350 to R600 diverter is worth asking about.
Selling the house brings its own bill. A buyer needs a valid certificate for the fence, and if an inspector finds faults, you pay for repairs before it can be issued. One installer charges a R600 site inspection fee, waived if the repairs run past R3,500. Call-outs for faults are typically R500 to R950 before any work is done.
Keeping the bill down without weakening the fence
- Match strand count to the wall height you already have, rather than defaulting to the tallest option.
- Get the energiser and battery quoted as separate lines so you can compare them across installers.
- Ask for the longer-run rate if your wall is near the 100 m mark; a few extra metres can lower the rate on all of it.
- Keep plants trimmed back from the wires. Fewer shorts means fewer call-outs.
- Compare up to 3 electric fencing quotes on the same strand count and energiser rating.
Do prices differ by region?
One 2026 price guide treats Gauteng (Johannesburg and Pretoria) as the baseline, says Cape Town may be slightly higher, and suggests other regions can be 10 to 20% more once travel is added. Another installer charges a small travel fee per visit (R100 in Pretoria, R150 in Johannesburg). Outside the metros, ask whether travel is in the price.

Does the per-metre rate include the energiser?
Usually not. Most of the price lists we checked quote brackets, wire and labour per metre, with the energiser and battery priced separately. One guide includes the energiser and earth system in its rate, and another folds in the compliance certificate. A rate that looks high may simply bundle more. Always ask which kind of rate you're looking at before you compare.
How much does an electric fence certificate cost on its own?
Published fees range from about R500 to R1,600 for the certificate. One installer adds a R600 site inspection fee. If the fence fails, you pay for repairs first, so an old fence can cost far more to certify than the certificate itself. On a new installation, check whether the certificate is already in the price.
Why is free-standing fencing so much more per metre?
A free-standing fence is the whole barrier, not a topping on an existing wall. It needs posts set in concrete, 18 to 30 strands and heights of about 1.8 to 3 m. That's why it costs roughly R150 to R400 a metre against R85 to R200 for a typical 6 to 8-strand wall-top.
How much does it cost to replace an energiser?
The unit itself costs about R2,500 to R7,800, depending on output and whether it's domestic or commercial grade. Add a call-out fee of roughly R500 to R950 and labour. If the old unit was destroyed by lightning, ask for a lightning diverter (R350 to R600) at the same time.
How often does the battery need replacing, and what does it cost?
Battery life depends on how often power fails and the battery's quality, so ask your installer what to expect. A replacement 7 Ah battery costs about R450 to R600, and a larger 12 Ah one about R700 to R1,000. A longer-running battery is worth considering if outages in your area are long.
