Vinyl costs more than most people expect. Rigid-core SPC planks, the type most homeowners ask about, usually land between R450 and R850 per m² once they're supplied and fitted. That's often more than entry-level laminate, because you're paying for a waterproof core.
Sheet vinyl is the budget option at roughly R300 to R500 per m² installed. It suits bathrooms and utility rooms, where a single piece with few seams is an advantage, but it's rarely chosen for a large living area.
What makes vinyl hard to price from a table is the floor beneath it. Because thin vinyl shows every dip, preparation is often the biggest variable on the quote. The ranges here come from South African installer and cost-guide pages dated 2024 to 2026, with VAT included where stated. Use them to sanity-check the vinyl flooring quotes you receive.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- A floor that isn't flat. Self-levelling compound at R120 to R250 per m² can add a third or more to the cost of a click floor.
- Glue-down installation. Fitting labour runs higher than for click planks, and the subfloor has to be near-perfect first.
- Wide or thick premium planks. SPC of 7 mm and up, or wide-plank designer ranges, sits at the top of the price range.
- Lifting glued sheet vinyl or carpet. Scraping off old adhesive costs more than lifting a floating floor.
- Lots of doorways and edges. Each door needs a transition and possibly trimming, and skirting is charged per metre.
- Working in Sandton or other premium suburbs. One Johannesburg installer reports rates 10 to 15% above its national average there.
Brings the price down
- Sheet vinyl in small wet rooms. It costs less per m² than planks and needs fewer joints sealed.
- Click SPC over a reasonably flat floor. Rigid planks tolerate small imperfections, so you may avoid a full levelling coat.
- Keeping existing skirting. Where it's in good condition, a matching bead at the edge costs less than new skirting.
- Clearing the room yourself. Moving furniture and lifting loose carpet before the installer arrives saves labour time.
- Doing adjoining rooms together. One continuous floor needs fewer transition strips than three separate jobs.
Three rooms, priced
These examples use the ranges above. None includes removal of an old floor, so add that if something has to come up first.
| Room | What's included | Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 5 m² bathroom | Sheet vinyl at R300 to R500 per m², plus one door trimmed at R150 to R300 | R1,650 to R2,800 |
| 20 m² bedroom | Click SPC at R550 per m² installed, floor already flat | About R11,000 |
| 35 m² open-plan living area | Click SPC at R550 per m², plus self-levelling at R150 to R250 per m² | R24,500 to R28,000 |
Why the open-plan figure jumps
At R550 per m², 35 m² of SPC comes to R19,250. Levelling the same area at R150 to R250 per m² adds R5,250 to R8,750. That's why two quotes for an identical room can be thousands of rand apart: one installer has priced the floor as it is, and the other has priced it as it needs to be.
Click or glue-down: where the labour money goes
On a 35 m² floor, click SPC labour at R150 to R220 per m² works out to R5,250 to R7,700. Glue-down LVT at R180 to R260 per m² comes to R6,300 to R9,100 for the same space, before you add adhesive and the extra preparation a glued floor demands.
Glue-down planks are thinner and the material can cost less, so the overall difference isn't always large. But glue-down only pays off where the screed is already smooth, or in big spaces where a stable, fixed floor matters. For most homes, click SPC gives a more predictable price.
Before you sign the quote
- Is the price for material and labour together, or labour only?
- Which product exactly, including thickness and wear layer, and how much extra has been added for offcuts?
- Has the installer checked the floor, and is levelling priced in or listed as a possible extra?
- Are skirting, door trimming, thresholds and sealing around the bath and toilet included?
- Who removes and disposes of the old floor covering?
- Is underlay or a moisture barrier needed for this product, and is it on the quote?
Where the budget goes wrong
Most overruns come from preparation found on the day. Old tiles with deep grout lines, a cracked screed under carpet, or glue residue from an earlier vinyl floor all need work before new planks can go down. Ask for any levelling to be priced per m² in advance, so you know the cost if it turns out to be needed.
Underlay, moisture barriers, skirting and door trimming are also commonly quoted as separate lines rather than bundled into the m² rate. If one quote looks much cheaper, check whether these are simply missing.
Do prices differ by region?
Most of the detailed 2026 figures here come from Cape Town installers and guides. A Johannesburg installer reports Sandton rates about 10 to 15% above its national average, and Pretoria and Centurion rates about 5 to 8% below.
A national cost guide makes the same broad point: large metros tend to run above the national range and smaller towns below it.

Why does vinyl cost more than laminate?
Entry-level fitted laminate starts at roughly R280 per m², while SPC vinyl planks usually start near R450 per m² installed. You're paying for a waterproof core that copes with kitchens and bathrooms. If the room stays dry, laminate may be the cheaper choice; see our [laminate flooring cost guide](/cost-guides/laminate-flooring) to compare the two.
How much does it cost to put vinyl in a bathroom?
A small bathroom is usually cheapest in sheet vinyl, at about R300 to R500 per m² installed. For a 5 m² room, that's roughly R1,500 to R2,500 for the floor, plus door trimming and sealing around the bath, shower tray and toilet. Ask whether the toilet will be lifted, since that changes the labour.
Can I save by buying the vinyl and paying only for labour?
Possibly. Labour for click SPC runs about R150 to R250 per m², so you can see how much of a supply-and-fit price is material. Check that the installer will fit a product they didn't supply, and that you've ordered enough extra for offcuts. Running short means waiting for stock that may come from a different batch.
Is self-levelling always necessary?
No. A floor that's already flat and sound may need only patching. But vinyl is thin, so dips and ridges show through, especially with glue-down products. If an installer recommends levelling, ask them to show you the problem with a straight edge and to quote it per m², typically R120 to R250.
What does a whole house of vinyl cost?
Published 2026 estimates for a house of 100 to 120 m² in laminate or vinyl range from about R30,000 to R80,000. Vinyl planks will usually sit in the upper half of that, given their higher price per m². Levelling, removal of old floors and the number of rooms all move the final figure.
