Landscaping in Gauteng

A Gauteng garden has to cope with a daytime watering ban for half the year and, on dolomite, with the fact that too much water in the ground is itself a hazard.

Most landscaping advice treats water as something you add. In Gauteng you need to think about it the other way round as well: when you're allowed to apply it, and where it ends up once it soaks in.

That changes what a sensible design looks like in Johannesburg, Pretoria and the East Rand, from the irrigation controller to where you put a pond.

Johannesburg's Level 1 restrictions: no garden watering from 06:00 to 18:00

Johannesburg Water has Level 1 restrictions in force from 1 September 2026 to 31 March 2027. Watering gardens and filling swimming pools is prohibited between 06:00 and 18:00, and you may not hose down paving or driveways. In late October 2026 the utility said week-on-week consumption had stayed high as temperatures soared, straining the reservoirs and towers that keep supply steady.

For a new garden, that rule shapes the irrigation more than any other factor. Hand-watering a freshly laid lawn before work or after dark is hard to keep up for weeks, so it's worth paying for an automatic system with a controller set to run in the permitted hours.

  • Ask the landscaper to programme the controller for early-morning or night cycles and show you how to change it.
  • Plan planting so new stock goes in when the summer storms can do some of the watering, rather than in the dry late-winter months.
  • Fit a rain sensor or check the controller after storms, so it doesn't water ground that's already wet.

On dolomite, overwatering is a sinkhole risk

Ekurhuleni says about 52% of its land is dolomitic, and parts of Tshwane, including Centurion, are too. The City of Ekurhuleni's geotechnical engineer describes sinkholes as caused by water getting into the ground from leaking services and poorly managed surface drainage, and lists ponding water, unexplained holes in the yard and slight sinking of the ground among the warning signs.

Advice quoted by TimesLIVE during Tshwane's 2025 sinkhole surge was direct: don't overwater gardens, and watch for leaking taps or wet soil patches. Ekurhuleni also holds owners responsible for dolomite risk on their own erven.

If your property is on dolomite, tell your landscaper before any design is drawn. Things to raise:

  • Irrigation zones sized to what the plants need, with no sprinklers soaking the same patch twice a day.
  • Leak-free pipework, and a habit of checking for constantly wet spots.
  • No unlined ponds or soakaways, and no stormwater directed into beds.
  • Lawn kept to areas you use, with drier planting next to the house.

Landscaping prices in Gauteng

Gauteng is one of the few places where published figures do show a gap. A 2026 Johannesburg landscaping price guide quotes kikuyu instant lawn at about R55 to R85 per m², against roughly R30 to R45 in national guides. The Johannesburg guide's prices are supplied and installed, while the national ones are closer to the cost of the grass alone, so much of the gap is labour. Compare quotes on the same basis.

Irrigation is where the watering rules show up in a quote. See the landscaping cost guide for irrigation and soil preparation ranges, and what to ask before you hire.

Landscaping in Gauteng: questions

When can I water my garden in Johannesburg?

Under Johannesburg Water's Level 1 restrictions, which run from 1 September 2026 to 31 March 2027, you may not water gardens between 06:00 and 18:00. Watering before 06:00 or after 18:00 is allowed. Washing paving or driveways with a hosepipe is not allowed at all during this period.

Can I put in a garden pond if my house is on dolomite?

Be careful. Ekurhuleni names water ponding as a warning sign for sinkholes, which form when water gets concentrated into dolomitic ground. Any water feature should be fully sealed, its overflow piped away rather than into the soil, and checked regularly for leaks. Ask a geotechnical engineer if you're unsure.

How do I know if my Gauteng property is on dolomite?

Ekurhuleni maps its dolomite land into hazard zones, and more than half the metro is dolomitic. Ask your municipality, or check your title deed conditions and any geotechnical report from when the house was built. Parts of Centurion and the wider Tshwane area are also on dolomite.

Is it worth installing irrigation with the watering restrictions?

Usually, yes. A timer lets you water at 05:00 or late evening without being there, which is exactly when Johannesburg's rules allow it. Drip lines in beds also waste less water than a hosepipe, which matters more when you can only water in short windows.
