Landscaping in the Northern Cape
A Northern Cape garden has to take 40°C afternoons, frosty winter nights and, in Kimberley, taps that are switched off overnight.

Most of the province gets between 50 mm and 400 mm of rain a year. Here, a garden plan is mostly a water plan, and it has to work around a municipal supply that isn't always on.
Kimberley's night-time shutdowns and your irrigation timer
Sol Plaatje Municipality has used nightly water interruptions to let Kimberley's Newton Reservoir recover. In October 2026, after a leaking valve on the 900 mm bulk pipeline at Droogfontein, supply was cut citywide from 22:00 to 04:00, and residents were asked not to water gardens, fill pools or wash cars during the repair weekend. In early 2025 a similar nightly cut ran from 21:00 to 04:00, alongside a daytime one from 12:00 to 17:00.
That matters for irrigation design. A controller set to water in the middle of the night will run while the supply is off, and the garden gets nothing.
- Set irrigation cycles for the early morning after supply returns, or for early evening before the cut.
- Consider a storage tank that fills when supply is on and feeds the irrigation by pump.
- Check the timer whenever the municipality announces a new round of cuts, because the hours have changed between rounds.
A larger fix is under way, slowly
Kimberley has a R2.5 billion programme to fix its bulk water supply. A pressure-management project under it cut network water losses by 27%, and a new 1,200 mm pipeline is being built to replace the ageing line behind the repeated failures. Until it's finished, plan a garden that can go a few days on stored water.
Plant for both extremes
Namakwa District's climate plan describes summer afternoons of 34°C to 40°C across most of the province, mild winter days around 22°C, and nights that often drop below freezing. A plant has to survive both, so ask your landscaper about heat and frost tolerance for every species on the plan, not just drought tolerance.
Rain falls mainly in summer across most of the province, but the west, including Namaqualand, is a winter-rainfall area and the coast gets only about 100 mm a year. In Springbok or Port Nolloth, autumn planting gets the benefit of the winter rain; around Kimberley, Upington or Kuruman, plant for the start of the summer rains.
Drought declared a disaster in Namakwa and ZF Mgcawu
The provincial government classified the drought as a disaster particularly in the Namakwa and ZF Mgcawu districts, after a dry 2024 summer and a below-average early winter in 2025, and it was declared a national disaster in February 2026. In those districts, assume lawn will be the first thing you can't water; keep it small or leave it out.
Landscaping prices in the Northern Cape
We found no published source showing that landscaping costs reliably more or less in the Northern Cape than the national ranges in our landscaping cost guide.
The local extras are water storage and a pump to feed irrigation through supply cuts, which a quote should list separately. See what to check before you hire.
Where in the Northern Cape
You can request quotes from anywhere in the province, including Kimberley, Upington, Springbok, Kuruman, Kathu, De Aar, Port Nolloth. Choose your region and suburb in the form, and providers who cover your area will quote.
Landscaping in the Northern Cape: questions
Why isn't my irrigation working at night in Kimberley?
Sol Plaatje Municipality has switched off supply overnight to let the Newton Reservoir refill, most recently from 22:00 to 04:00 in October 2026. A timer set inside those hours runs on empty pipes. Move cycles to early morning or early evening, or feed irrigation from a storage tank.
What plants survive the Northern Cape climate?
Ones that handle heat and frost, not just drought. Summer afternoons commonly reach 34°C to 40°C, and winter nights often drop below freezing. Ask your landscaper to confirm both tolerances for each plant, and to keep lawn small.
When should I plant a garden in Springbok?
Namaqualand, in the west of the province, gets its rain in winter, so autumn planting lets the rain help new plants establish. Most of the rest of the province, including Kimberley and Upington, gets its rain in summer.
