Pest control in Gauteng
Rats are Gauteng's most talked-about pest, and the province has two invasive roof rats rather than one. Inland, soil-dwelling termites are the timber threat to watch for.

Johannesburg has been fighting rodents for years. In 2014 the City launched an integrated rodent management programme after serious infestations in Alexandra, Diepsloot, Ivory Park and overcrowded inner-city buildings, and in January 2026 Daily Maverick reported that the City was considering revising the project, which had fallen by the wayside.
This page covers what's specific to Gauteng. For hiring checks and treatment types, see our pest control service page.
Rodents follow the refuse
Research reported by Daily Maverick points to discarded food as the biggest driver of rat numbers in Johannesburg, with the highest concentrations where waste piles up and refuse collection is poor. Brown rats dominated the samples from Alexandra and Tembisa, and a University of Pretoria researcher explained why poisoning a few animals doesn't fix the problem: unless you remove the breeding nucleus, new rats move in.
The City's own strategy leans on hygiene and natural predators, including barn owl boxes in Alexandra schools, with chemicals used only when needed. It asks residents to manage household waste, fix leaking water pipes, seal holes and cracks, and fit door strips and mesh screens. A good pest control operator will tell you the same: baiting alone buys time, but proofing the house keeps rats out.
Two roof rats, not one
A genetic survey published in 2011 found the Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) in South Africa for the first time, at 13 sites in four provinces including Gauteng. SANBI says the two look almost identical and that the Asian house rat often lives in ceilings, roofs and wall gaps, damaging homes. Modelling by University of Pretoria researchers, published in 2022, predicts suitable habitat mainly in inland Gauteng and Mpumalanga, and notes that the brown rat, once thought to be mainly coastal, is now confirmed in inland urban Gauteng too.
You don't need to know which species is scratching in your ceiling: the treatment is the same. What it does mean is that roof rats in Gauteng are well established, so closing the gaps under roof sheets and around the eaves matters as much as the bait.
Subterranean termites inland
A government committee report summarised by the South African Wood Preservers Association found that subterranean termites occur north of the Great Kei River in the east and the Olifants River in the west, which takes in the whole of Gauteng. The same report warned that termites can nest in the space beneath floors, get past metal termite barriers, and travel through cavity walls and conduit piping to reach roof timbers.
Look for mud tunnels on foundations and inside walls, and hollow-sounding skirtings or door frames. Because Gauteng's termites come up from the soil, the usual treatment is a chemical barrier or baiting around the house, plus repairs to damaged timber.
Pest Control prices in Gauteng
Gauteng is the one province where a published source compares prices by area. A March 2026 guide quoted in our pest control cost guide lists general treatments at about R1,000 to R1,700 in Pretoria and Centurion, R1,100 to R1,900 in Randburg and Midrand, and R1,500 to R2,500 or more in Sandton, which it says runs 15 to 25% above baseline Pretoria and Johannesburg rates.
That's a single source, so use it as a guide, not a rule. Rodent work usually includes a follow-up visit, so check how many visits each quote covers before comparing them.
Where in Gauteng
You can request quotes from anywhere in the province, including City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, Soweto, Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort, Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Benoni, Boksburg. Pest Control in Gauteng: questions
Why are there so many rats in Johannesburg?
Research reported in 2026 found that discarded food and poor refuse collection are the biggest drivers, with the highest rat concentrations where waste builds up. The City launched an integrated rodent programme in 2014, built on hygiene and barn owls, and in 2026 was reported to be reviewing it. At home, keep bins sealed, remove food sources and get entry points sealed.
Is pest control more expensive in Sandton?
One March 2026 price guide says so: it puts general treatments in Sandton at about R1,500 to R2,500 or more, compared with roughly R1,000 to R1,700 in Pretoria and Centurion, a premium of 15 to 25%. It's a single source, so compare up to 3 quotes from registered operators to see what you'll actually pay.
What is the Asian house rat, and is it in Gauteng?
It's an invasive rat first identified in South Africa in a 2011 genetic study, which found it at 13 sites in four provinces, Gauteng among them. It looks almost identical to the black rat and often nests in ceilings and roofs. Treatment is the same: baiting or trapping, plus sealing roof and eave gaps.
Can termites reach my roof in Gauteng?
Yes. A committee report summarised by SAWPA says subterranean termites can nest under floors, get past metal barriers, and nest in cavity walls and conduit piping from where they reach roof timbers. If you find mud tunnels anywhere in the house, get a registered operator to inspect.
