Pest control in KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal has a pest map of its own: an imported drywood termite that first turned up in Durban, beetle clauses on coastal property sales, and malaria-carrying mosquitoes in the far north.

What you're up against depends a lot on where in KZN you live. A homeowner in Durban North selling a house deals with beetle inspections and timber pests. A family in Jozini or Umhlabuyalingana lives in one of the country's three malaria-endemic provinces, where homes in affected communities have their inside walls sprayed against mosquitoes every year.
This page covers those local factors. For how to choose a registered operator and what different treatments involve, see our pest control service page.
Drywood termites that started in Durban
Most South African termites live in the soil and tunnel up into buildings. The West Indian drywood termite (Cryptotermes brevis) is different: it lives entirely inside dry timber and furniture, with no need for contact with the ground. A South African Wood Preservers Association (SAWPA) history of timber regulation records that this termite spread out from Durban and Port Elizabeth, where it was originally discovered. Heavy insect infestation of roof timbers was also reported in the Durban area in the 1940s, which fed into the first national timber regulations in 1948.
Because drywood termites never touch the soil, a soil barrier around the house won't stop them. Signs are small heaps of hard, sand-like pellets below skirtings, door frames, built-in cupboards or roof timbers. Ask the operator to identify the species before quoting, because the treatment for drywood termites is different from a subterranean barrier.
Beetle clauses on coastal sales
STBB Attorneys describe beetle certificates as customary in coastal property sales, naming KwaZulu-Natal alongside the Western Cape, and note that the bank financing the purchase may also ask for one. The certificate isn't a legal requirement, and there's no legal standard for its content: depending on how the clause is worded, it may cover only wood-boring beetles or all wood-destroying organisms, including termites and fungi.
In KZN that wording matters. If your clause mentions termites, a beetle-only inspection may not satisfy it. Give the inspector a copy of the clause, and book early in case treatment or timber repairs are needed.
Malaria areas and government spraying
KwaZulu-Natal is one of South Africa's three malaria-endemic provinces, and its three endemic districts are uMkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo and Zululand. A 2026 study in Malaria Journal describes persistent local transmission in uMkhanyakude, with about 3,841 cases recorded in Jozini Local Municipality over five years.
The core vector control measure in these areas is annual indoor residual spraying (IRS) of households in communities with locally acquired cases, according to research published in Malaria Journal in 2020. The government sprays the inside walls with an insecticide that kills mosquitoes resting there. If your home is sprayed, ask the spray team how long to leave the walls before washing or repainting, and tell any private pest control company about the spraying before it treats indoors.
Pest Control prices in KwaZulu-Natal
A March 2026 price guide quoted in our pest control cost guide puts general treatments in Durban at about R950 to R1,800, and says coastal tourist areas often cost 15 to 25% more than baseline rates. We haven't found a reliable published price for drywood termite treatment in KZN, so ask for an inspection and a written quote.
Malaria spraying is a public health programme run in targeted communities, not a service you book. It isn't a substitute for treating cockroaches, rodents or termites, which you'd pay a registered operator for.
Where in KwaZulu-Natal
You can request quotes from anywhere in the province, including eThekwini, Durban, Umhlanga, Ballito, Westville, Pinetown, Amanzimtoti, Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay, Newcastle, Ladysmith. Choose your region and suburb in the form, and providers who cover your area will quote.
Pest Control in KwaZulu-Natal: questions
How do I tell drywood termites from subterranean termites in Durban?
Subterranean termites build mud tunnels up walls and foundations. Drywood termites leave none, because they live entirely inside the wood; instead you'll find small piles of hard, gritty pellets below infested timber. SAWPA records that the West Indian drywood termite spread from Durban, so mention pellets when you book an inspection.
Do I need a beetle certificate to sell my house in KZN?
Not by law, but it's customary in coastal sale agreements, including in KwaZulu-Natal, and banks may require one. Read the clause carefully: some cover only beetles, others termites and fungi too. Book a registered inspector early so there's time for any treatment.
My house in uMkhanyakude was sprayed for malaria. Can I still get pest control?
Yes. Government spraying targets the mosquitoes that carry malaria, not cockroaches or rodents. Tell the pest control company that your walls were recently sprayed so it can plan its treatment, and follow the spray team's advice before washing or painting the treated walls.
Which parts of KwaZulu-Natal have malaria?
Researchers identify three malaria-endemic districts: uMkhanyakude, King Cetshwayo and Zululand, in the north-east of the province. The US CDC's travel guidance names uMkhanyakude, along the border with Mozambique, as the risk area. Durban and Pietermaritzburg fall outside these districts.
