Pest control in Limpopo

In Limpopo's malaria areas, the most important pest control in a home is done by the provincial health department, not a private company: each season, its indoor spraying campaign targets about 1.1 million households.

Limpopo is one of South Africa's three malaria-endemic provinces. The US CDC's travel guidance places the risk along the borders with Zimbabwe and Mozambique in the Mopani and Vhembe districts, with only sporadic cases recently in the Waterberg. Transmission is highest from September to May.

Mosquitoes aren't the only local concern. Invasive rats have spread into Limpopo's towns, and the whole province falls inside the historical range of soil-dwelling termites. This page covers those factors. For registration checks and treatment types, see our pest control service page.

The provincial spraying campaign

Limpopo's indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaign sprays the inside walls of homes with insecticide and targets about 1.1 million households, Health-e News reported in February 2026. Mosquitoes that rest on treated walls after feeding are killed, which breaks the cycle of transmission.

The 2025/26 campaign shows how weather gets in the way. Limpopo health spokesperson Neil Shikwambana told Health-e News that heavy rains had pushed the campaign behind schedule, at 48%, before it recovered to the 70% threshold, with spraying set to continue until March 2026. Since 1 April 2025 the province had recorded 838 malaria cases and four deaths.

  • Let the spray team in, and clear the walls they need to reach.
  • Ask the team how long to wait before washing, plastering or painting sprayed walls.
  • If you also book a private pest control treatment, tell the operator your walls were sprayed.

Floodwater and mosquito breeding

After the January 2026 floods, experts quoted by Health-e News warned of a significant increase in breeding sites for malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Residents in villages outside Polokwane and Modjadjiskloof told the publication they feared an outbreak.

A nurse quoted in the same report gave practical advice that applies to any home: fill water holes with soil, get rid of opened tins that collect rainwater, close windows and doors in the evening, and wear long sleeves at night. Around the house, check gutters, buckets, old tyres and blocked drains after every heavy storm.

Invasive rats in Limpopo towns

Two of South Africa's three invasive rats have turned up inland. A 2011 genetic survey first identified the Asian house rat in the country, at 13 sites across four provinces including Limpopo, and SANBI says it often nests in ceilings, roofs and wall gaps. Research by the University of Pretoria, published in 2022, adds that the brown rat, historically recorded mainly along the coast, is now confirmed in inland urban areas of Limpopo.

Rats in the roof call for the same approach whatever the species: bait or trap, then block the gaps at the eaves and under roof sheets so new ones can't move in.

Pest Control prices in Limpopo

We haven't found published pest control prices for Limpopo, so we can't say whether treatments cost more or less here than in Gauteng or the coastal cities. Use the national ranges in our pest control cost guide to judge quotes.

Outside Polokwane and the bigger towns, ask whether a quote includes travel, and whether follow-up visits for rodents are priced in or charged separately.

Pest Control in Limpopo: questions

Which parts of Limpopo have malaria?

The Mopani and Vhembe districts, along the borders with Zimbabwe and Mozambique, according to the US CDC's travel guidance, which also notes sporadic recent cases in the Waterberg. Transmission is highest from September to May, and heavy rain raises the risk.

Should I let the malaria spray team into my house?

Yes. The provincial campaign sprays the inside walls of homes in malaria areas with an insecticide that kills mosquitoes resting on them, and it's the province's main defence against malaria indoors. Ask the team how long to leave the walls before washing or repainting.

Will a private pest control company spray for mosquitoes in Limpopo?

Some will, but it doesn't replace the provincial malaria spraying, which is planned around transmission areas and season. A registered operator is more useful for cockroaches, rodents and termites. For mosquitoes, removing standing water around your home after rain does the most good.

Are there termites in Limpopo?

Yes. A government committee report summarised by the South African Wood Preservers Association found subterranean termites north of a line from the Great Kei River in the east to the Olifants River in the west, which takes in all of Limpopo. Look for mud tunnels on walls and foundations, and get a registered operator to inspect.
