How much does air conditioning cost in South Africa?
A wall-mounted split air conditioner usually costs between about R5,500 and R22,000 supplied and installed, depending mostly on its BTU size and how awkward the installation is.

A typical bedroom or small lounge unit of 12,000 BTU costs about R6,500 to R14,000 supplied and installed in 2026. Smaller 9,000 BTU units start around R5,500, while a 24,000 BTU unit for a big open-plan room runs about R12,000 to R22,000. Long pipe runs, a new electrical circuit and ducted systems cost extra.

An aircon quote has two parts: the unit itself and the work to fit it. The unit is the bigger share. Kandua's guide prices a 12,000 BTU split at about R7,500 to R12,000 on its own, while a standard installation adds about R1,800 to R3,000. That's why installers usually quote one supplied-and-installed figure per room.
The size you need, measured in BTU, sets most of the price. After that it's the installation: how far apart the indoor and outdoor units are, how high up the outdoor unit has to go, and whether your distribution board has space for a new circuit.
The ranges below come from 2025 and 2026 published South African price guides by installers and cost aggregators. None of them clearly say whether VAT is included, so confirm it on every quote. These are a guide for budgeting, not a fixed price.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- A bigger BTU rating. Moving from 12,000 to 24,000 BTU can add R5,000 to R10,000 to the installed price.
- A long pipe run. Beyond the 3 to 5 m most installers include, each extra metre of copper piping and trunking costs about R250 to R400.
- A new dedicated circuit from the distribution board, which adds roughly R500 to R2,500 depending on the work.
- Height and access. Second-floor outdoor units, concrete drilling and scaffolding are charged as extras.
- Ducted or multi-room systems. Ducting, ceiling work and design push a whole-house system well past the cost of several splits.
- After-hours or emergency work, which one guide prices at R250 to R500 an hour on top.
Brings the price down
- A back-to-back install, with the outdoor unit directly behind the indoor unit on the same wall.
- Sizing the unit to the room instead of buying a bigger one than you need.
- Fitting several rooms in one visit, so the installer's call-out and setup are shared.
- Using an existing, correctly rated circuit if your electrician confirms it's suitable.
- Servicing the unit every year, which costs a few hundred rand and helps avoid a regas or repair costing R800 to R2,500.
Cooling a bedroom and a lounge: a worked example
Say you want a 12,000 BTU unit in the main bedroom and an 18,000 BTU unit in a 35 m² lounge. Using the ranges above:
- Bedroom unit: R6,500 to R14,000.
- Lounge unit: R9,000 to R18,000.
- Subtotal: R15,500 to R32,000 for two standard installations.
- If the lounge needs 6 m of extra piping: 6 × R250 to R400 = R1,500 to R2,400 more.
- If you need a new circuit: add roughly R500 to R2,500.
Reading an aircon quote line by line
A clear quote names the brand, model and BTU rating of each unit, and says whether it's an inverter. It should state how many metres of piping are included, and the rate for each metre beyond that.
Look for the wall bracket or ground stand, the condensate drain, the electrical connection and commissioning. One installer lists these as part of a standard installation; others price brackets separately at about R350 to R600. If a quote is much cheaper than the rest, check which of these it leaves out.
Refrigerant work must be done by someone registered with SAQCC Gas, which the Pressure Equipment Regulations under the OHS Act make compulsory. Ask whose registration covers your job.
Split units vs a ducted system
A ducted system hides one large indoor unit in the ceiling and feeds every room through vents. Published 2026 prices start around R40,000 for a small home and run to R90,000 for a medium home of 150 to 250 m². Large homes cost R90,000 to R140,000, and luxury homes more.
Four or five split units for the same house would usually cost less, but every room gets a visible unit and its own outdoor box. Ducted systems also cost more to service, about R1,500 to R3,500 a visit for the whole system.
Running and upkeep costs after installation
- Servicing: about R450 to R850 per split unit a year. Many companies waive the call-out fee if you go ahead with the service.
- Maintenance contract: about R800 to R2,000 a year, usually covering one or two services plus discounted repairs.
- Regas after a leak: about R800 to R2,500 per unit. The leak itself should be found and fixed first.
- Call-outs: about R300 to R600 in normal hours, and up to R1,500 for after-hours emergencies.
Do prices differ by region?
Kandua's guide gives slightly different labour figures by province for a standard installation: about R1,800 to R3,200 in Gauteng, R2,000 to R3,500 in the Western Cape and R1,800 to R3,300 in KwaZulu-Natal. The unit price is broadly the same nationwide.

How much does it cost to install an aircon I've already bought?
Installation-only work costs roughly R1,800 to R3,500 for a standard job with a short pipe run. One installer charges about R2,000 to R2,500 for 9,000 and 12,000 BTU units and up to R2,800 for larger units. Extra piping, a new circuit and difficult access are added on top.
Why do aircon quotes for the same unit differ so much?
Usually because the installation is different. One quote may include only 3 m of pipe, another 5 m. Some include a bracket, drain and electrical connection; others charge for each. Brand and model differences matter too. Ask each installer to list what's included so you can compare like with like.
Is an inverter aircon more expensive?
Yes, an inverter unit costs more to buy than a fixed-speed one of the same BTU rating, but published guides agree it runs far cheaper. The ranges in this guide are mostly for inverter units, which are now the common choice for homes.
How much is an aircon service?
A standard service of a wall-mounted split unit costs about R450 to R850 in 2026. Multi-split systems with two to four indoor units cost about R800 to R1,500, and a ducted system about R1,500 to R3,500. A regas, if needed, is charged separately.
Do I need an electrician as well as the aircon installer?
Often, yes. If the unit needs its own circuit from the distribution board, the electrical work costs about R500 to R2,500 depending on the distance and whether the board needs upgrading. Some aircon companies arrange this themselves; others ask you to bring in an [electrician](/services/electrical-work).
