Solar prices are quoted three ways: as a whole system, per kilowatt, or as a list of parts. The whole-system number is what you'll pay, but the parts list is how you compare quotes. One 2026 guide works it out at about R10,000 to R15,000 per kW for a complete system, with lithium storage adding roughly R3,000 to R6,000 per kWh on top of that.
Batteries move the price more than panels do. Panels have become cheap: a 550 W panel is about R1,500 to R2,200. A 10 kWh lithium bank can cost R28,000 to R55,000 or more, and premium storage pushes 5 kW systems towards R180,000. How much battery you buy depends on whether you want backup through the night, or only enough to bridge evening peaks and short outages.
The figures here come from South African solar pricing guides updated between May and October 2026. Most don't say whether VAT is included; SolarQuote SA's (August 2026) prices do include it. Brand choice explains much of the spread: Sunsynk, Deye and similar mid-tier kit sits in the middle, Victron and Fronius at the top.
What moves the price
Pushes the price up
- More battery storage. Each extra 5 kWh lithium unit adds roughly R14,000 to R28,000.
- Premium inverter brands. Victron or Fronius inverters cost R28,000 to R45,000 against R14,000 to R24,000 for mid-tier hybrids.
- DB board upgrades. An older distribution board may need replacing or a sub-board added, at R3,000 to R15,000.
- Flat or awkward roofs. Tilt frames on a flat roof cost R1,500 to R3,000 a panel; structural reports cost R3,000 to R8,000.
- Surge protection and monitoring. Surge protection adds R1,500 to R3,500 and a Wi-Fi monitoring dongle R800 to R2,000 if they're not included.
Brings the price down
- Right-sizing the battery. Size storage to the evening load you actually run, not to the whole house.
- Mid-tier hybrid inverters. These cover most homes at half the price of premium brands.
- Larger, fewer panels. Higher-wattage panels need fewer mounts, at R400 to R700 each.
- Adding batteries later. A hybrid inverter lets you start with one battery and add another when budget allows.
- Registering on time. Cape Town charges nothing to register but R6,425.90 to reconnect a disconnected unregistered system.
Building up a 5 kW hybrid system: the parts list
One 2026 breakdown of a mid-range 5 kW system shows where the money goes. Its total of about R117,000 sits in the middle of the range above.
| Part | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| 5 kW hybrid inverter (Sunsynk or Deye class) | R20,000 |
| 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery | R85,000 (about R8,500 per kWh) |
| Four 460 W panels | R17,000 |
| DB board and protection | R8,000 to R15,000 |
| Roof mounting and cabling | R3,200 to R6,000 |
| Installation labour, 1 to 3 days | R8,000 to R20,000 |
| CoC and commissioning | R2,500 to R5,000 |
Why another quote might be R40,000 cheaper
The battery line is where quotes split. That breakdown prices 10 kWh at R85,000, while other 2026 guides put a 10 kWh bank at R28,000 to R55,000. Ask each installer for the battery's brand, capacity in kWh and warranty, then compare the battery lines side by side.
Registration and certification fees
A grid-connected system needs an electrical certificate of compliance, typically R1,500 to R3,500 on its own, or more with commissioning or an engineer's sign-off. Most installed prices include it.
SSEG registration fees depend on who supplies your power. Eskom said it would charge eligible residential customers no registration fees from April 2025 to 31 March 2026, saving a typical 16 kVA household up to R9,132; check with Eskom whether that still applies. Municipal fees range from nothing to about R3,000, with City Power at about R1,200.
Extras that solar quotes often leave out
When you compare solar power quotes, check each of these is either priced or clearly excluded.
- DB board upgrade or sub-board: R3,000 to R15,000.
- Structural engineer's report: R3,000 to R8,000, if the roof needs one.
- Roof repairs: quoted case by case if tiles or sheeting are damaged.
- SSEG registration fee: up to about R3,000, depending on the municipality.
- Tilt frames for flat roofs: R1,500 to R3,000 per panel.
Payback on a home system
Payback estimates in 2026 guides range from about 5 to 7 years for a 5 kW system in one guide, to 8.8 to 12.4 years in another, depending on the city, tariffs and whether you can sell power back. These are estimates, not guarantees. Ask installers to base theirs on your own electricity bills.

What does a 5 kW solar system cost with a battery?
Fully installed with about 10 kWh of lithium storage, 2026 guides put it at roughly R74,500 to R145,000. A smaller single battery can bring it down to around R55,000, and premium brands can push it past R180,000. The battery, not the panels, accounts for most of the difference between quotes.
How much does a lithium solar battery cost?
A single lithium iron phosphate battery of about 5 kWh costs roughly R14,000 to R28,000. A 10 kWh bank costs about R28,000 to R55,000 in most guides, though one mid-range breakdown prices it at R85,000. Compare capacity, brand and warranty, not only the price.
What does solar cost per kW?
One 2026 guide puts a complete installed system at about R10,000 to R15,000 per kW. Another's installed prices for 5 to 24 kW systems work out at roughly R11,800 to R18,100 per kW, including batteries. Battery-heavy systems cost more per kW because storage is priced per kWh.
Do I have to pay to register my solar system?
It depends on your supplier. Municipal SSEG fees range from nothing to about R3,000; Cape Town doesn't charge to register, and City Power charges about R1,200. Eskom waived fees for eligible residential customers until 31 March 2026. Unregistered systems can cost far more: Cape Town charges R6,425.90 to reconnect.
Is the certificate of compliance included in solar quotes?
In most installed prices, yes. On its own it typically costs R1,500 to R3,500, rising to R7,000 where an engineer's sign-off is included. Check the quote says it's included, because municipalities usually require it for registration.
