Solar power in Limpopo
Limpopo has no metro, so who approves your solar system depends on who sells you electricity: Polokwane, a smaller municipality such as Modimolle-Mookgophong, or Eskom.

Some Limpopo homes buy power straight from Eskom, while towns such as Polokwane and Modimolle-Mookgophong distribute it themselves and set their own embedded generation rules. Both municipalities say the same thing at the outset: a grid-connected system needs their written approval first, and the application form doesn't apply to homes in Eskom's supply area.
Check the name on your electricity bill before asking for quotes, then ask installers which process they've completed before in your area.
Polokwane: approval first, sign-off last
Polokwane's application form says systems within the NRS 097-2-3 simplified connection criteria are likely to be approved, which covers most home systems; larger ones may need grid studies. The applicant declares that the system won't be connected or operated without the municipality's written approval, and a competent person must sign the commissioning report once it's built.
Panels that sit unusually high, more than 1.5 m off the roof surface or 600 mm above the ridge, also need Planning and Building Development Management to approve them. In SALGA's 2023 survey, Polokwane had an application process but no approved SSEG tariff, with 4 MWp of embedded generation registered.
Modimolle-Mookgophong: roofs that can't carry panels
Modimolle-Mookgophong's November 2024 requirements rule out two roof types outright: panels are not permitted on asbestos or thatch roofs. If your house or lapa has either, the array would need another location, such as a ground mount or outbuilding, which changes the quote. The municipality also recommends finishing any roof waterproofing first, and checking your building insurer's requirements.
Its other rules are worth knowing before you sign:
- Don't buy equipment before written approval, which isn't guaranteed.
- Connecting without consent is an offence that can lead to a fine or imprisonment.
- Non-exporting systems with reverse flow blocking need a prepaid meter in place; exporting systems need a bi-directional meter, supplied by the municipality at your cost.
- Exports go uncredited until the municipality operationalises SSEG tariffs. After that, your export credits over a financial year can't exceed what you paid for electricity.
- Installer accreditation such as the PV GreenCard is recommended.
On Eskom supply: registration is now free
If Eskom bills you directly, your installer registers the system with Eskom. On 1 October 2026 Eskom extended its waiver of registration-related fees, roughly R9,000 including smart meter installation, for grid-tied systems up to 50 kVA until further notice. Registration is still required; only the fees are waived.
Hail and storms
In north-eastern South Africa, including Limpopo, the hail season runs from October to March, peaks in November, and storms usually strike in the afternoon. By December the far north-east is modelled to be largely hail free. Ask about the panel's impact rating, and confirm your building insurance covers the array.
Solar Power prices in Limpopo
Published 2026 price guides don't show Limpopo solar installations costing reliably more or less than elsewhere, so use the national ranges in the solar cost guide.
The local differences are in connection costs. Eskom customers currently pay no registration fees, while municipal customers who want to export pay for a bi-directional meter. If your roof is asbestos or thatch in Modimolle-Mookgophong, price a ground-mounted array.
Where in Limpopo
You can request quotes from anywhere in the province, including Polokwane, Tzaneen, Mokopane, Thohoyandou, Lephalale, Bela-Bela, Musina, Phalaborwa. Choose your region and suburb in the form, and providers who cover your area will quote.
Solar Power in Limpopo: questions
Can I put solar panels on a thatch roof in Limpopo?
Not in Modimolle-Mookgophong, whose requirements ban panels on both thatch and asbestos roofs. Other municipalities and Eskom may treat it differently, so check before you buy. A ground-mounted array or an outbuilding roof is the usual alternative; ask installers to quote for both.
Will Polokwane pay me for solar power I export?
SALGA's 2023 survey recorded no approved SSEG tariff for Polokwane, so there may be nothing to credit exports against. Ask the municipality's electricity department what applies now. Until there's an export tariff, a system sized for your own daytime use usually gives the best return.
Do I pay Eskom to register my solar system?
Not at the moment. Eskom has waived registration-related fees for grid-tied systems up to 50 kVA until further notice, after earlier deadlines in March and September 2026. You still have to register the system with Eskom, and the installation still needs an electrical certificate of compliance.
