Plumbing prices at a glance

Expect a call-out fee of roughly R350 to R750 in normal hours and labour of R350 to R850 per hour. Replacing a 150 litre electric geyser usually lands between R6,000 and R13,000 all in, while clearing a simple blocked drain is often under R2,000 unless jetting or a camera is needed.

Plumbing prices in South Africa are built from three parts: a call-out fee to get the plumber to your door, labour by the hour once the first stretch of time is used up, and materials at whatever the job needs. A small repair might cost little more than the call-out. A geyser swap or a burst pipe inside a wall can run into five figures.

The ranges below come from South African price guides published in 2025 and 2026 (listed at the end). Most of those guides don't say whether their figures include VAT, so check every quote you get. A rate of R600 an hour excluding VAT is R690 once 15% is added.

Use these numbers to sense-check a quote, not to replace one. The fastest way to know your real cost is to describe the problem clearly and compare plumbing quotes from up to 3 plumbers. It's free to request.

What moves the price

Pushes the price up

  • Night, weekend and public holiday call-outs, often billed at 1.5 to 2 times the normal hourly rate.
  • Pipes buried in walls, under tiles or below concrete slabs, where access and making good add hours.
  • Bigger or upgraded geysers: a 200 litre unit, a solar-ready model or a ceiling with poor access.
  • Blockages deep in the main sewer line that need jetting or a camera instead of a hand rod.
  • Outdated installations the plumber has to bring up to standard while doing the original job.
  • Long travel distances outside the plumber's normal service area.

Brings the price down

  • Booking non-urgent work for normal weekday hours.
  • Grouping several small jobs into one visit so you pay one call-out fee.
  • Choosing the same geyser size and position so no pipe or platform changes are needed.
  • Asking whether the call-out fee is deducted from the final bill when work goes ahead.
  • Clear access: an empty cupboard under the sink or a clear path to the ceiling hatch saves billable time.
  • Comparing like-for-like itemised quotes rather than a single verbal price.

A 150 litre geyser replacement: a worked example

Say your 150 litre electric geyser has failed and needs replacing in the same spot. Using the component prices from Kandua's 2025 geyser guide, a quote might add up like this:

  • Add the emergency call-out premium if it happens at 2am rather than on a Tuesday morning.
  • The electrical connection is a separate line in some quotes. Kandua lists electrical connection and certificate work at R800 to R2,000.
  • If you claim on insurance, your excess comes off what the insurer pays. Fonster puts typical geyser excesses at R2,000 to R5,000.
ItemLow to high
150 litre electric geyserR4,000 to R6,500
Installation labourR1,500 to R3,500
Pressure control valveR500 to R900
Drip trayR200 to R450
Removal and disposal of the old unitR250 to R500
TotalR6,450 to R11,850

A blocked drain: what a small job really costs

A kitchen sink that drains slowly is often a one-hour fix. With a call-out of R350 to R750 and perhaps one extra hour at R350 to R850, a simple job could come in around R700 to R1,600 before any parts.

The price climbs when rods don't work. Published figures put high-pressure jetting at about R1,300 to R3,850, and a camera inspection with cleaning at roughly R1,300 to R2,200. Paying for the camera once can save repeated call-outs if the same drain keeps giving trouble.

What a good plumbing quote itemises

  • The call-out fee, and whether it falls away or is credited if you go ahead.
  • The hourly rate, the estimated hours and the after-hours multiplier.
  • Every part by name and size, for example the geyser brand and litre capacity, valves and drip tray.
  • Making good: patching plaster, replacing tiles or reinstating paving after access work.
  • Removal of the old geyser or damaged pipe.
  • Any certificate fee, and whether prices include VAT.
  • The guarantee period on labour and on parts.

Plumbing certificates when you sell

In some municipalities a seller must provide a plumbing or water installation certificate before transfer. In Cape Town, the City's Water By-law requires a new certificate for every sale, and one Cape Town provider prices it from about R500 for an apartment to R1,000 to R1,200 for a large house. A national compliance calculator puts the typical cost at R800 to R1,500.

The seller pays for the inspection and any repairs. Because faults are common in older homes, one calculator suggests budgeting an extra 30 to 50% on top of the inspection fee.

Plumbing cost questions

Is the call-out fee charged on top of the hourly rate?

Usually the call-out fee covers travel and the first 30 to 60 minutes on site. After that, the hourly rate applies. Some plumbers deduct the call-out from the final invoice if you go ahead with the work, but not all do. Ask before booking so there are no surprises on the bill.

How much more does an emergency plumber cost?

Published guides list emergency call-outs at roughly R600 to R1,300 or more, compared with R350 to R750 during normal hours. Labour after hours is commonly 1.5 to 2 times the standard rate. If water is already off and nothing is getting damaged, waiting until morning can save a fair amount.

Why do geyser replacement quotes vary so much?

The unit itself can vary by a few thousand rand depending on brand and size. Then come valves, a drip tray, disposal, the electrical connection and access to the roof space. A quote that looks cheap may leave some of these out, so compare the itemised list, not only the total.

Does a leak detection visit include the repair?

Normally not. Leak detection, at around R750 to R2,800 in published guides, pays for finding the leak with pressure tests or listening gear. Fixing it is quoted afterwards, and the cost depends on where the leak is. A leak under a tiled floor costs more to reach than one in an exposed pipe.

Who pays for the plumbing certificate when a house is sold?

The seller. The fee covers the inspection, which sources put at about R500 to R1,500 depending on the size of the property. If the plumber finds problems, the repairs are an extra cost to the seller, so it's sensible to book the inspection early in the sale.
