Swimming pools in the Northern Cape
In Kimberley, filling a pool is among the first things the municipality tells you not to do when supply runs short, and in a Northern Cape summer that can be exactly when you want to.

Most of the province is hot and dry, and a pool here earns its keep. The catch is water. Sol Plaatje Municipality has banned or discouraged pool filling repeatedly since at least 2017, and in the driest districts drought was declared a disaster in 2026.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't build. It means the fill, the cover and the timing deserve as much thought as the shell.
Sol Plaatje's pool-filling bans
When demand outstripped production during a December 2024 heatwave, Sol Plaatje's municipal manager imposed restrictions from 11 December that prohibited filling swimming and paddling pools, along with garden watering and topping up ornamental ponds. At the time, the city needed about 115 megalitres a day but could produce about 100.
Shorter appeals keep coming. Over 16 to 18 October 2026, while a leaking valve on the main bulk pipeline near Riverton was repaired, the municipality asked residents to refrain from filling pools, and high-lying areas served by the Newton reservoirs lost pressure or supply altogether.
- Ask the builder to schedule the fill outside the hottest weeks, and to check for current restrictions first.
- Agree in writing what happens if a ban lands between finishing the shell and filling it, and ask how long the shell can be left empty.
- If you're resurfacing, don't drain until the crew and the water are both ready.
Heat, evaporation and cold nights
Namakwa District's climate plan puts summer afternoons across most of the province at 34°C to 40°C, with mild winter days of about 22°C and nights that often go below freezing. Hot, dry air means a pool left open loses water quickly, and each top-up competes with a stretched municipal supply.
A cover is the cheapest answer to both problems: it cuts evaporation in summer and holds the day's warmth through cold nights in spring and autumn. If you want to swim beyond the hottest months, ask for solar heating or a heat pump to be quoted alongside the cover, not instead of it.
Outside Kimberley
The provincial government singled out the Namakwa and ZF Mgcawu districts, which include Springbok and Upington, in its drought disaster classification. If you're building there, ask your local municipality about restrictions before you sign, and ask the builder whether a tanker fill can be arranged.
Swimming Pools prices in the Northern Cape
We found no published source showing that pool prices in the Northern Cape differ reliably from the rest of the country; the city price tables we checked don't cover Kimberley or Upington. Get at least two quotes on the same scope so you can compare like with like.
Use the swimming pool cost guide for current national ranges, and read what to check before you hire before you commit. Ask for any water delivery on a separate line.

Swimming Pools in the Northern Cape: questions
Can I fill my pool in Kimberley?
Not always. Sol Plaatje prohibited filling swimming and paddling pools under restrictions from December 2024, and asked residents not to fill pools during pipeline repairs in October 2026. Look for current notices from the municipality, or ask your pool builder to confirm, before booking the fill.
Is a pool cover worth it in the Northern Cape?
Yes. With summer afternoons commonly reaching 34°C to 40°C, an uncovered pool loses water fast, and every top-up draws on a supply that has struggled to meet demand. A cover also keeps warmth in on cold nights, which stretches the swimming season.
What if restrictions start before my new pool is filled?
Agree this with your builder before you sign. Ask who pays for a tanker fill if municipal filling is banned, and how long the shell can be left empty. A clause covering delays caused by water restrictions protects both of you.
